When driving my disco and the turbo comes in there is a sound like escaping air - like if you press a tyre valve down. Its quite loud. I have had other turbo cars and you usualy only hear the turbo spool up. I have checked the hoses to the intercooler expecting a spilt but can't find anything obvious.

Is this a normal sound?? I think it is a bit sluggish especialy on hills.

Is there somwhere else the escaping pressure could be coming from?

I am going to take the hoses off at the weekend and check them more thoroughly.

you'd need to take them off to check properly as they might have a small hole that only opens up under pressure

Could I use a tyre pressure guage to meassure the boost pressure? What do you reckon?

you can buy gauges from most car type shops that either plug in or screw into the system some where. when i had fuel problems on my masser i had two gauges stickin up past the bonnet so i could see them while driving. one for fuel pressure and one for boost pressure.
unless you have a shrader valve fitted you'd be hard push to use a tyre gauge

Ok heres what I did to fix this.

Take off the turbo intake pipe from the MAF - turbo

Take off the turbo pressure sensor pipe.

give all the connections a good clean to remove all the recycled oil and stuff.

cobble up some pipe so you can connect your compressor to the nipple on the turbo that the sensor was attached to.

fire up your compressor till the tank is full - then turn it off so you can hear properly

put the palm of your hand or otherwise plug the turbo intake

release the air from the tank and listen for air escaping in the intercooler plumbing.

In my case bottom intercooler hose was the wrong size also jubilee clip bust so not clamping properly. So new hose and clip. Sorted!

Hook up compressor again - now can't hold the palm of my hand over the turbo intake against the pressure.

Hope this helps someone trying to diagnose. I guess if you had a pressure guage on as well you could set your wastegate actuator at the same time.
