Am I correct that the fuel tank sender is a float-operated variable resistor?

If this is the case, what is the value range so that I can test it before I re-fit it?

From what I have read, they are also different for diesel or petrol? Is this correct?

Thanks for any info.

from what I remember it's 240 ohm arm hanging down (empty) and about 30 ohm with arm up (full) I usually ground out the sender wire (0 ohm) to check gauge is fully working too

Diesel has an extra set of contacts to energise low fuel light same resistance for level.
Very hard to obtain a diesel one with the extra contacts.

Thanks for the replies.

The vehicle did have a low fuel light on it. I will have to have a closer look at the one on the old tank.

The one fitted to the newer tank I have has one extra contact in the middle of the top plate.

I had a look earlier and the one on the old tank only has two contacts.

While we're at it, does anyone knoe the resistance / temperature range for the temp sender? It seems like it would be an idea to test it before fitting.
