Why don't you give it a go at cleaning it? It could just be dirty brushes or summit.

Ive spent an age with the jet wash then threw 2 tins of wd40 at it, no joy.
It ran for 3 hrs after the mud and gave up on the way home, the mud was a little thick

You need to strip it down to clean it.
It's only deep gloopy mud that you need to worry about. I've not had any issues with water ingress or mud. You fit a steering guard to help keep the mud from getting as high

ive bought a brand new alternator off flea bay for £45, im just hoping its the right one :doh:
Ill strip the old one down and use it for a spare if i can get it working

It looks like the right one to me although it looks like the Rover 75 version.

my mate was charged £375 to supply and fit an alternator to a td5
there was 2 on there ending within 10mins of each other, other one went for £30
think there around £180 in shops :doh:
