It appears that the bearings on my 2004 Freelander TD4 could be worn. VCU was replaced when I got it 2 years ago at around 68000, but thinking cheap bearings may have gone in? Whirring noise when driving, but nothing else. No issues on full lock etc, purely the whirring/slight abrasive noise when moving. If it is bearings, am I doing damage by continuing to drive it? If the bearings are failing they will only get worse over time. Have a read of this:

I had the same whirring noise, faster you go more it whirs lol. It turned out to be the bearings in the rear diff, luckily I went for the rear diff first as it was leaking oil slightly (prob why the bearings failed) and I had a spare unit. Might help

If it is the VCU bearings (which I doubt after 2 years - who supplied them?) you wont be doing any immediate harm, you will just gradually get more vibartions. IRD or Diff bearings may need more immediate attention and it will be for others more experinced than me to advise on how to diagnose.
