The arm on my spare wheel mount looks naff. The car looks mint and has been well looked after, but that lets it down, aesthetically. It's covered in a grey plastic-y material, and its all coming away, leaving the white bumpy stuff exposed underneath. I'm wondering if anyone has ever spruced theirs up? Spray? What's the best option? Or maybe I should just buy a new one, if they're easy/cheap enough to get hold of.. What do you reckon? :)

It sounds to me like the type of job that could take a long time getting all the flakey paint off before you can spray it.

Might be quicker just to see if you can get a good replacement one from a breakers or ebay. Don't know how much they'd cost, not much I expect.
 
Cheers GrumpyGel, thought that myself to be honest. I'd prefer it in black as well, rather than grey!
 
I'm planning on painting mine, already done the top bit. But new wheels are so big you can see the scabbyness thru them

How is the painting going? Does it look okay? You should show us some before & after photos.

Just looked on Ebay, the carrier's are really cheap to buy, but have the same cosmetic problems :doh:
 
It's aluminium, not "white bumpy stuff", the white stuff is the oxide layer on top (on steel, you'd call this rust).
Strip it back with any paint remover you like, sand the aluminium smooth, get a decent etch primer and satin black spray can from anywhere and re-paint it, cost you less than 20 quid in total

They were black originally, just fade over time ;)

Ey your second to last picture I spot an obvious perfect modular hub cover to be made, now if their was only more of them cheap enough...


And while it's stripped can you fix my rear wash wipe??? Lol
 
Just sanding so far, making sure the corrosion is gone, aim is to get it a nice uniform colour rather than have it perfect, most of it's partially obscured, the top bits in good nick cos I've done it before.
