I have a 1978 series 3 - 88. I seem to be in 2 wheel drive but don't have free wheeling hubs? Why are the wheels spinning in the snow?

you do know you can select two and four wheel drive through the gearbox don't you?

Erm, cos it is 2 wheel drive unless you tell it otherwise.

so when the red lever is pushed forward I am in 2 wheel (rear wheel) drive?

Push down the Knob wit the spring under it for 4wd High range.

Yeah 2 wheel hi range. Pull back for lo range 4 wd. Or press yellow for 4 wd hi range.

(there should be a little plate that describes it)

FFS F/W/H are are whole different issue

the point of the free wheeling hubs is to save fuel when in normal running conditions by not having the engine turnint the front drivetrain and axle

Supposed to save fuel, makes about as much difference as having a **** before ya set off IMO

with red lever back in low its in 4wd at all times with red forward in high its only in rwd unless you depress yellow knob when it becomes 4wd ,to get back into 2wd pull red lever into low then forward into high yellow knod will then pop up ,you can push yellow knob to engage 4wd in high whilst moving but not if a wheel is spinning
