We are still on with getting the landy redy for mot yesterday afternoon we started on brakes all shoes are good and free moving and cylinders all free and moving, we blead all 4 sides (alot of air came out) with the bleed easy fitted its got a good brake and holds it then remove the bleed easy and all pressure has gone and no breaks again ??
I removed the pipe from non return valve on servo and there is no vacuum pressure at all?
It has a t pice in and pipe runs to what looks like a expansion tank and then to oil breather , has anyone had similar problem or have any advice on the vacuum pressure drop

I assume you have a 2.25 diesel ? Mine was like that at times and I blanked off the silly butterfly flap in the fanimold then fitted an electric vacuum pump. this is wired through a relay and is connected to the brake light switch, works well even without engine running. Around £70 and an hour and a half to fit. Got mine from a Dutchman on fleabay but it is a Hella U26 from memory branded as a Volvo item. Hella UK do not supply them.

Had the same issue with mine.

The butterfly flap controls the vacuum, and mine was not closing due to the hand throttle being open slightly, once sorted brakes were ok and servo working. I did look into adding a pump but why bother if the original set up works?

How did you sort it? Did your vacuum pipe have a t pice in going to a metel tank?

The metaltank is a receiver so that there is a stored amount of vacuum.
This is required as the vacuum is created by engine inlet suction when you brake you typically take your foot off accelerator so little or no suction at that moment hence the receiver.
Do a web search for MudFun he has a good page on setting up the diesel inlet flap which creates the suction.

The butterfly flap can work when set up correctly but most now have terminal wear in the body where the spindle operates.This leads to air leaks and can make the engine smoke as well as poor brake performance. I bored the body to take new bushes turned from aluminium and then made a new spindle in brass. I still prefer the electric vacuum set up.
I do not think any parts are available to replace the original body and spindle that is why i repaired my original one.

This is a very interesting thread! (I am also working on this series 3 with Matty the original poster) I don't suppose you have a link to one theese pumps? If the butter fly flap is worn out and so an electric pump fitted could the vacume pipe from the butterfly flap be blanked off?, and would blanking this off also reduce the smoke?

toms3 Yes the vacuum pipe is blanked off. The new pump pipes directly to the servo and only works when brake light is activated be sure to wire to the correct side of the brake light switch so it is not permanently on. As for supply put vacuum pump in to fleabay and you should find one. Mine came from Holland in a couple of days with a wiring diagram. Around an hour and a half to fit.
