why is nothing simple?

and yes, I have searched the internet for the terribly dull subject... so, what's the up-to-date thinking for UK temp ranges? EP90, or 80w/90? any makes to steer clear of?

Thanks

Adam

Either EP90 or 90w90, GL4 seems to be the consensus.
Wilkinsons do Comma 80w90 GL4 for £3.50 a litre bottle which is massively cheaper than anywhere else and you can order to collect in store. Quite a few people have used this stuff.

3.50! Just ordered myself 6 bottles.
Although just noticed a 5 ltr of the same stuff on ebay for 17.63.

Whatever takes your fancy really.
Lots of series people say you must have GL4 otherwise your brass shims etc will break up, me and loads of others run GL5 with zero issues.
I run 75/90 syn in the 90 diffs and 85/140 in the series all GL5.

Yes i read about the yellow metals stuff... That was the trouble with the internet search... Lots of info on series stuff, but not a lot on a 300tdi age 110. I don't know if the tbox has any yellow metals in it, and therefore wants something different.

The older Series boxes have bronze bushes in them (I remember changing them on ours back in the 1980s) , but the later Defender ones have a lot of roller bearings. There's bronze in the forks that move the difflock and the splined sleeve that engages high or low gear but the gear and bearing components are all steel. I'm using GL4 because of my overdrive unit, whose instructions specifically tell you not to use GL5 because it's full of brass components apparently. If you haven't got one of those GL5 should be fine. I tend towards the view that cheap oils are probably OK if you change them regularly. If you're feeling rich you could treat it to something at the premium end of the market like Difflock Evolution.

center diff has yellow metal thrust washers

Didn't take mine that far apart - I just popped the new centre diff in and did't dismantle the outgoing one
