mudmut

When i first got my Landy it ran quite hot most of the time, checked everything and found the rad fins full of mud, cleaned all this out and runs much cooler now, 82-88C, went green laning for the first time the other week and the the temp stayed at about 83C which is great. The only problem now is if i drive over 55 mph for any lenght of time the temp goes up to about 100C and stays there. The engine is a non intercooled 19j of which i know nothing of its history but was told it was completely rebuilt about 10 years ago by Scorpion Racing, which is no longer in business. I suspect that the pump and maybe the boost has been tweaked which may be the cause of the higher temps at greater speed/load. What I'm thinking is would an intercooler help, i know a cooler denser charge produces a bigger bang but with less throttle input would that help keep temps down, what do you think.

thats what 19js do .

minesthe same you can watch the temperature rise withthe speed. 55 MPH was what i kept it at although it would do 75 if you pushed it i didnt think that was fair on the old brute.

i would have fitted a better rad had i been keeping it but im fitting a 200tdi instead.

About 55 seems to be the sweet spot, just wondered if running at 100C was going to cause any problems or an intercooler would help

your cooling system isn't doing its job.

get it hot and feel the rad all over for cold spots.

if found drain it, stick a hose pipe in and flush and flush, or buy a new one.

check fan is working properly, also your stat mightn't be opening fully.

I have carried out all the normal checks, got it hot and checked the rad, no cold spots at all, top and bottom hose get hot. May get a laser temperature gauge and see whats happening

take the stat out and see what happens

Not sure on the td but its a bad idea on the tdi as the coolant can bypass the rad via the bypass hose and get very hot very quickly.

If its any help my tdi has a very accurate temp gauge fitted and along the motorway at approx 65 runs just under 90, a long long hill pulling hard at the top and losing a couple of mph results in a temp of 92/93, only gets hotter if rad blocked with mud, or Ive forgotten to take the rad muff off!
My series 2 fitted with tdi and original s2 rad is pretty much the same temp wise.
I can see temp dropping on the gauge as engine coasts downhill telling me its that time of year again to get the radmuff out.

Mine has had different gauges fitted with actuall temp readings, was at a play and day sunday and the temp never went above 82C, on the 40 mile drive down there at 55 touching 60 at times it sits at about 100C if i coast down hill for a while or drop to 50 it dropd below 90C
