Hi all. My disco 2 rolled on Tuesday night. It was taken away from the scene. The insurance company are accessing it as we speak. The question is, if the car is a total loss it can i buy it back from them for spares for my other disco or can they keep it. Cheers lee

you can get the option to buy it if the insurers want to sell it back to you, don't see why they wouldn't.
you may get it back for free, i did when my van was written off.

Actually that depends on the Damage Category. if they list it as Cat A or B. then ya can keep it. but if CAT A you have to dispose of it completely and no parts may be used from it. If Cat B then you can break it and sell any parts not affected by the impact. but the bodyshell may not be reused.

You don't have to buy it back, it's your vehicle.
You own it not the insurance company, you do not give up title to your property just 'cos you damaged it.
Talk to the insurance company and tell them what you want and negotiate from there, don't let them dictate to you.

+1. When my landy was stolen I was able to by it back because it was a cat c write off. My insurance company at the time (admiral) said it its Cat C &D you can usually buy it back no problems. Cat A & B they usually won't let you buy it back because of the severity of the damage. This is so it can't be put back on the road. As for owning the vehicle, when the insurance company pays out for the damage they then legally own the vehicle. When you go through the claim you have to mention you would like it back before the final claim value is calculated. The only want £250 for my 110. Also be aware if you do buy it back when the claim is sorted and paid out the storage yard/ claim assessor can start billing you from the day the claim is sorted so make sure you can pick it up ASAP.

All insurance company's work differently
If its insured full comp and they pay you out it then becomes there's
As a rolled car it would be 50/50 if it ends up as a cat A or B but im sure it would be a wright off because it would need to be re-shelled
I have herd of wright off's that the owner has wanted to buy back and for some reason they couldn't
It's all in the small print
I've also herd and seen cars that have been picked by the salvage yard "on the say so of the insurer" and sold on before the owner has even been told there cars has been wrote off
This is because of the storage charge that starts the second the car has been classed as total loss so they move them ASAP

So the only way your going to know is by contacting your insurance company

Try to get it taken back to your property if you can as they may write it off and not tell you straight away.
I know people who have had thier cars written off and they could not get their belongings because the car had already been taken away.

I would never let an insurance company take my vehicle to thier recommended repairer.
I have insisted in the past that they recover to my home and send the asseser round when I am in.
Also remember you can tell them which bodyshop you want it repared at, they may not like it but it is your right to do so.

Make sure you go ASAP to remove anything you want out of or off the vehicle (they probably wont pay any extra for side steps or any other acessories and on most vehicles they dont add value) if it has been taken to there repairer as thing can and do go missing and no one will know anything about it.

As has been said it is your vehicle until they have bought it and you have agreed a price and NEVER accept the first offer unless it is a good one.

Yeah but no point having it back if ya then have to weigh it in, cos they've Listed it as a Cat A writeoff.

Couldn't stop the insurance company taking it out of the recovery people's yard. I have requested that I want it back from day one as I just put a brand new set of good year MTR's on it and various other parts which all add up to a fair wack. It's a week today but still not heard anything yet. Might start chasing them tomorrow for an answer. Thanks for all your info its made great reading. 😃

You will need to nause your insurance company on a daily basis. The yard where your car is being kept is earning money from it so will try its hardest to be difficult with you. At the end of the day you own the car so its up to you.

Cat A is usually fire damaged (totally burnt out) and good for nothing. Cat B will be parts only but requires a licence to have such a vehicle. Cat C is total loss and 9 times out of 10 the insurer will have a cat d repaired.

AFAIK theres noting stopping you having the wreck on yr drive though while they decide, id have thought theyd want that, less storage fees = less payout for them

I managed to get mine taken back to my house and I told the insurance company they would have to send someone round to assess it and they were fine with that. As you said if they then decide it's a write off you can strip off the accessories and they can collect it.

Luckily mine wasn't a write off but i'm still waiting to get it back from the garage since over 2 months ago when someone crashed into it :(

Got a call from the accessor today. Told me its a CAT B and will not let me buy it back. They have offered the pittance of £1900-00 which I told him where he could place that offer. He has asked me to tell him what I'm looking for,so I'm doing a bit of research this weekend to see what I can find.

you have the right to remove any non standard accessories or extras.

When my 300tdi 110 was written off the assessor offered me £1000 for it with £3000 worth of extras fitted to it. I told him that as he was gonna take the p*** I was gonna strip em off and he told me it would drastically reduce the price he was offering. I told him where to go and went ahead and stripped the vehicle.

I eventually got £3400 for it with absolutely no extras on it whatsoever. It might have summit to do with making em store it for 3 months before accepting the payout. I told em I was prepared to wait as long as it took to get the right price.

When they offered me the right to buy it back at 'salvage' price it had suddenly leapt in value cos they wanted £900.
