Hi Rangey dudes,

I'm planning to try and take my bumper off at the weekend to fit my towbar. While it's off, is there anything I can do to sort out the big ripple that I've got that's causing the paint to wear away on the tailgate?

It looks like I'm missing one of those clips, but from what I've heard, they don't do all that much anyway (anyone happen to know the part number for them though - I can't get my microcat application to work).

I was thinking maybe a nice thick glue of some sort between the steel and the plastic might do the trick. Has anyone had any success in fixing this?

I don't really want to buy a new bumper as it's already cost me far too much lately.

All suggestions welcome (except maybe from BoB:)).

I had the same problem a couple of years ago and tried everything including a hot air gun and wedging a piece of timber between the bottom of the tailgate and the plastic part of the bumper to hold it in position until it cooled. Removed the wood, it was better, but still caught the tailgate when it was opened.
Finished up buying another (Flat) bumper and the spring clips from the old one were added to those already on the replacement, just in case.
Although better, there is still very little clearance when the tailgate is opened and I am wondering if the lower tailgate can be lifted at the hinges. I can lower the bumper but that creates a gap between the rubber seals and the bodywork either side.
A good, weatherproof, strong adhesive may work, it's worth a try I would use a few "G" clamps and wood to clamp it in place whilst it sets.

Hi Irish.

Bummer, that was pretty much what I was thinking of trying. My other cunning plan was maybe some hot glue sticks if I can find any suitable which will fit my gun. That's pretty sticky stuff.

Hmm. Someone I spoke to yesterday reckoned I might need to replace the bumper mounts at the ends of the chassis rails if the bumper has never been off, but I think I'll wait and see first.

I've been looking all week, but no rear bumpers on fleabay. Mine's got the colour coded corners anyway so the chances of finding a straight one the right colour are pretty low I suspect.

Well, if I succeed in improving it I'll let you know. I might have to try and make a replacement clip - thanks for looking though. I wonder what happened to the missing one - they don't look as though they can just fall off!

The colour coded panels are easily removable.
There are no clips towards the centre, where I suspect your's or most buckle. Our local builders merchants have some "Stick & Seal" stuff in the same size tubes as silicone seal comes in. I have used it to seal around the bottom of my steel garage, it's clear, flexible and sticks like hell, best to leave it overnight for full strength. Cost around a fiver a large tube, which would be more than sufficient.

Cool. I'll try the local builders merchant on Saturday mornin! Sounds like it'd be worth a try. My ripple is on one side for some reason, just where the missing clip is. The rest of it looks fine.

Just a thought here... Are your bumpers just "Black Plastic" ??? if so I'm gonna be replacing mine with some colour coded ones from Joe next week.. if its any good to yer you can "Cross my palm with some silver & have my rear !!

More like grey plastic, but I think they're all the same, aren't they? Cheers for the offer, I'll bear it in mind, especially if the coloured bits come off easily.

Buggr. Foiled for this weekend as I can't get a torx socket anywhere! I think it's a 14 looking at the instructions for the towbar. Halfrauds only seem to do them up to a 12 and my local branch didn't have much stock in their tools section anyway. Grrr.

Anyone know the proper name for these things? Are they just called Torx sockets? Most of the shops I went to seemed to think I was talking gibberish when I asked!

Why on earth do they use such stupid bolts on the bumper anyway? It's not as if anyone's going to steal it!

torkx bits i was at machine mart yesterday (sat) they said they where open bank holiday mon ,they usually keep good stocks,,,,dave

But "bits" usually refer to the male ones. I've got plenty of those. The sockets (ie female) seem to be a bit more unusual.

I've found one on the draper web site. I spose I'll have to order one ready for next weekend. I'm just surprised that none of my local tool shops seem to know what I'm talking about let alone stock them. Ah well.

Nearest Machine Mart is too far away really. I'll get one ordered.

I found a standard socket that did the job, the type that just grips on the points rather than the whole flat of a normal nut.
 
Hi Chaps

Hope you don't mind me jumping here with my first post but I'm currently having a nightmare with the rear bumper on my Range Rover P38.

It dropped on one side so today I decided to remove it completely and after much struggling and dirt in the face, it fell off. I have bought all new brackets for the back of the chassis legs and the side fixings but unfortunately these weren't the problem. Problem is that the big steel U section that goes inside the plastic bumper across the back has completely rusted away.

This seems a bit surprising as the chassis and everything else under there looks very good condition for a 1997 vehicle but the steel work inside the bumper can be crumbled to dust. Does anyone know if it's possible to buy new steel work for the bumper (can't find a part number for it) or do I have to search for a second hand bumper and hope to find one in better condition?

Anyone in Surrey have a bumper for sale?

Apologies dude, I missed that post. :doh:

Thanks for the links. I don't really want a complete set though.

Anyway. my local tool shop reckons he can order a single one in so I'll take him up on it tomorrow and try again next weekend. I'm just surprised that nobody round here seems to stock them.

Thnkas for the suggestion, Datatek and Irishrover - I didn't even think about doing that, but I don't have any of those sockets anyway - might have been easier to get one. Doh! Ah well, next weekend is the new date for the attempt!!

if you have the complete set next time you come across them you won't have a problem........
 
The bumper parts are not separately sold (Steel and plastic sections). Best bet is to buy a good (Flat) second hand one.
