You could just use a normal winch and remove it and swap it, I have pretty much zero mechanical knowledge or ability and it only takes less than 5 minutes to remove it. Its just 4 bolts and then it lifts out.

You could use a connector like this one to then just plug it into the new truck: X-eng High Performance Off-Road Engineering

Thats just a standard Anderson Plug (plus cable) which you can buy for a couple of quid on ebay.

what vehicles are they for surely if its a defender and a disco or something like that you could try and make some adapters so you have a winch bumper with a winch bolted on, that fits all the vehicles. would look allot more professional that just a bolt in plate, might take a bit of fabricating.

connectors arent an issue, got loads of them hanging around in my current office that i can ...acquire...for much larger kws than we are talking here haha.

I want something that goes "click click" to be honest mate, i cant be arsed with crawling around in the cold with nuts and bolts... too much faff. I want to be able to have it stashed in the back in a box, a bit like that winch in a box concept, and go oh **** i need the winch for this. click click and its done, and then take it off again so no thieving bastard can rob it.

The winch in a box idea is good, with a seperate battery, with probably an inbuilt charger which would run from a 12v socket.

Mates got a laser cutter... ill have to get him to knock me up some plates. But need to get that winch first.

Maybe i should spend a few more pennies on something a bit nicer.

Whats the weak point on these cheaper ones? electrics? motor? gearboxes etc?

i have the concept of a plate permantly mounted to the winch, which then clips into a plate which is permantly mounted to your existing winch bumper ( on standard winch mounting hole dimensions) so no need for changing of bumpers etc.

Our vehicles are a defender, a challenger and an L200. So it will me made to fit all those.

correctemundo... nothing fancy and they work a treat to be fair.

What are you classing as the top 4 schools in the world... and what criteria are you basing that on?

Went and did a google and asked what were the top 10 engineering colleges in the world............ got the answer. Cambridge and Oxford came in # 4 and 5.

when you **** up whilst winching and your vehicle falls off a ledge etc and it will apply a shock loading. Its called playing it safe and thinking of real life situations. I want my vehicle to be able to handle what is thrown at it. And produce high quality products for my customers.

Think in that situation you would have a cable failure or reach the end of your rope and would break/pull out. You been watching Indiana Jones, or James Bond 007 lately

Mmmm google... that pure sacred place where everything that is said must be true... let us all bathe in its innocence and trust in its knowledge.

A few months back The BBC did a story had same results. Rating the top 10 and 50 colleges in the world.

nah im too busy running a succesful engineering design business winning contracts that i shouldnt (because i dont have a degree) and generally applying sound engineering practices to have time to watch telly. Though i do find myself spending alot of time on here. :wtf:

who runs cable these days anyway... so last year darling.

What are you engineering???????????? sounds interesting

The portable winch has already been designed, developed and manufactured, and is cheaper and more reliable than any electric rubbish.
It's called a Tirfor.

I believe you will find that it is called a dixon and bate.

I am about to mount my leccy winch to a dixon and bate slider for a drop hitch and then I can chuck it on and off with just 2 pins to hold it in place.

front or rear?

I'm mounting it on the rear on mine but if you can chop the bit that bolts to the crossmember down into two and then use one half on the front and the other on the rear.

I have the PTO winch on the front of mine if I ever get around to getting a prop for it.

i think i have a prop for that.......is it td5?

makes sense,im looking at the same type of make up for the front.I need to keep the weight down as most days im full anyway..I figured that it could go front or back if on a DB....
