Do'er of stuff and the like
Right done a search and cant seem to find much.

As i now have 3 offroad vehicles ... but as yet no winches.. i want to get set up. However i dont really want to buy 3 chuffin expensive items that will rarely be used.

So i want a portable winch which can move from vehicle to vehicle.

Ive looked around and there seems to be some pieces of kit out there, but the only type ive really found are for mounting into an american style 2" sq. tube for towbars. Dont really fancy this.

Is there anything out there which is premade or am I back to designing a pukka piece of kit for me'sen?
 
I think it's a design job, but, shouldn't be a hard one, a plate with winch on it on quick release bolts to allow easy swapping - then use some of those fork lift battery charging connectors for easy power swapping!

and why not??????????? They work damn good
 
yeah i was going to go for something like that, but ive got a design knocked up for one where the bolt simply stops it from falling off, all the load is taken up by big a 10mm plate and the winch just slides in and is retained by this.

because from an engineering point of view they are a bit **** to put it bluntly. You are relying on a single pin with no redundancy. (on the ones i have seen so far)

not what i fancy if im dangling ft up a near vertical wall. (well you never know it could happen!!!)

If you look further along about them they are rated for 25,000lbs pulling a trailer. the single pins is high tensile rated for 50,000psi shear. Don't laugh at US engineering they do have good stuff. And you don't hear about putting rear cross members on for rusting out or frame replacement. cars/trucks 50-60 years old still good chassis
 
That goodwinch site has some good ideas but not quite what im after.
Still at least its another project to develop :)

now if only the mrs buys me a winch for christmas?

US and good engineering are two terms that rarely go together in the same sentence. If they are so clever why do they have us engineer loads of their stuff? Because one of englands main exports in engineering is our expertise.

The only reason their cars last so long is because materials are all 4 times too thick and because they dont have the same amount of chlorides in the atmosphere in the inner states.

And 25,000 pulling a trailer, is different from a shock loading.

How do you shock load a winch, didn't know you used them like a snatch rope

There are alot of Brits in engineering school in the US getting there training at the top 4 schools in the world

they also do one with a compressor instead...

i dunno about it...i want to have a chat with the bloke before i buy one. Im happy to get one.. just dont want it to break after 2 minutes.

Im always killing cheap pressure washers and since this one runs off the same motor im just cautious :)

What are you classing as the top 4 schools in the world... and what criteria are you basing that on?

just because somewhere has been voted the best school in the world. Doesnt mean it is. Just like lots of people say the scandinavians are a lovely people when there is clear evidence to the contrary. :rolleyes:

All the dopey ****wit graduates i meet havent got a clue abour proper engineering. sure they can do maths and write a bull****ty report. But they cannot design for toffee. Give me old school engineer who just gets the job done and worries about the paperwork later anyday.

Its these engineers that got jet engines and rockets and all kinds of cool stuff built in months, not decades like they do now.

when you **** up whilst winching and your vehicle falls off a ledge etc and it will apply a shock loading. Its called playing it safe and thinking of real life situations. I want my vehicle to be able to handle what is thrown at it. And produce high quality products for my customers.
 
You could just use a normal winch and remove it and swap it, I have pretty much zero mechanical knowledge or ability and it only takes less than 5 minutes to remove it. Its just 4 bolts and then it lifts out.

You could use a connector like this one to then just plug it into the new truck: X-eng High Performance Off-Road Engineering

Save your money, these ad-ons are only gimmicks on what is only a cheap winch, get yourself a half decent winch such as Goodwinch or superwinch etc, they don't cost much more but are way more reliable.
