I’m back
when my 90 overheated a few weeks ago and i called out the rac,the driver that came out thought hed fixed problem but didnt so i had to call them out again 10 mins later.the driver that 1st looked at the motor rang me back and said hed told the call centre that i hadnt been offroading,apparantly if you have been offraoding and even if you are on your way home you aint coverd?

is this right

Sounds like a lot of bull, but it wouldn't suprise me if they tried something like that.

If I have mud on my landy, and a bit of grass stuck to the axles I have clearly been offroading and therefore I'm not covered?

What if I am driving across my friends field and its been muddy so I get the tell tale signs all over the landy...

At what point does this rule come into play, if I was offroading yesterday and I break down on the motorway today, but haven't cleaned the landy... you see what I am saying.

If this is true I think there is a serious problem with RAC cover for 4x4's, OR we will all need to start carrying emergency cleaning kit for use before the RAC man arrives!

If you've been greenlaning you aint been off road cos otherwise you wouldn't need tax, mot and insurance would you?;)
 
Well, my cambelt went about 6 miles away from Toms farm a week ago. I dont have RAC cover but my girlfriend does have AA cover. Because it was late on a Sunday, they didnt send their own guy out, but a local recovery company instead. They were sound as a pound, didnt question anything about me offroading. You can see from the pic how dirty mine was at the time!

Sounds to me like you got some jobsworth tw@t. Pretending he has done you a favor cus it makes his insignificant life feel slightly important. All be it for a moment or two!:rolleyes:

As ratty says, lanes are still a public right of way so are therefore not offroad. If you do get this line of enquiry say nothing about the pay and play you have just been to and say you have been enjoying the day laning. I think this is a one off incident unlikely to be repeated.

maybe the RAC have stated somewhere "cover not included for offroad racing/rallying" same as insurance. maybe they thought you been up to that sort of thing?

i did consider the old taking the dogs for a walk in the woods if it happens again,im gonna see if i can find the terms and conditions and have a squint thru that..
 
Something else to be aware of is that some of the feckers won't recover a trailer which could leave you well inconvenienced if you happen to be towing one when you break down.

That is correct. Some also have size restrictions. We had an incident this weekend where the breakdown organisation only covered trailers up to 7m and as the broken down vehicle had an 8m caravan on the back, the organisation told the member that it was up to him to pay to get the caravan home.
 
I've been recovered a couple of times after I've been off road, and remeber seeing vast numbers of AA vans in the camp site at Billing!

Apparently the arguement they are using is that anything over 7m long on the back of a recovery truck makes the vehicle over the maximum permissible length.

We had a member of the response group breakdown at frickley and were advised to "make sure it's spotless before you ring the AA or they won't recover you." the vehicle was thoroughly jet washed and towed 2 miles down the road. "The first thing the driver said was If you've come from the pay and play site I can't recover you." of course it was denied and he was happy to then set about fixing the thing. Turned out someone had wired their CB to the imobiliser circuit and it had blown a fuse :mad:
 
I had to pay to have my disco recoverd buy the RAC after my smash, then they even wanted to charge me to take it OFF the wagon if he had to back winch it.
 
RAC transported mine 200+ miles to my mechanics after i'd been greenlaning, without to many questions. (head blown)

I guess the bottom line is;
make sure your covered, and hope you don't come across a tree hugger when your recovered.

And the last time I went off-roading at Oxleys Shaw, 1 breakdown vehicle and 2 transporters turned up, thankfully not for me.

There is a difference between offroading for fun (should generally be covered) and offroading competitions which comes under motorsport, which generally isn't covered. (at least according to my policy details)
 
I think the competition element may be cruicial. I've always had someone able to tow me to somewhere more accesable, in case he still had to drive all through the campsite, and I may have been a bit econmical with the truth when explaining where the poroiblem occurs, but I've never been questioned about it. The motor has not been particularly muddy though.
