Mine was doing exactly the same, window drops but wouldn't open! Hit it a couple of times and it'd work fine for a while, wasn't the switch!:D

The wiring loom inside the tailgate had rubbed thru and was shorting to earth intermittently stopping it working!

I have a variation on this problem with my 2003 Freelander S.
Tonight I shut the back door, the window did not go up. I tried to open it and can hear a click and some whirring but nothing happens. I read various posts and tried "unlocking" with the key in the door, but again to no effect. I then read about lowering the window using the switch at the front. I did that OK. The door does not open and now the window, will not go up at all. Not so good at this time of year.
Any suggestions welcome!
Thanks
Ed

PS the door is fixed shut but not tight shut.

The spring in my door handle went kaput I replaced it with a cut down BIRO one
cheap repairs I love em!l

SORTED!

After a lot of electrical investigations, and cursing, my problem turned out to be a simple mechanical one - a strip of rubber seal had got stuck in the lock. It took a lot of loosening and undoing through the 1/2 inch of access. Once freed the window would operate normally (well once the detachable roof was back in place (switch depressed) and the door was closed).

Thank goodness.

i had to cut the plug of the micro switch and bullet connect the wires, the plug was all green and corroded inside
