check the linkages are ok first, if they are flopping around, it might not be engaging properly, hence the jumping out.
Engage high from the side of the transfer box and see what happens, if its still jumping, its fecked...

We know about mechanics lol just #### all to do with landrover defenders in the past it all seems pretty basic engineering so should be ok

should be fine then, fenders ain't exactly rocket science, more barn door and hammer!!
