Hi guys, I was an old user, has a P38 for a while which I loved before being given a company car...........

I am now looking to opt out and want another 4x4. I will be doing c.30k a year and get a fuel card, so petrol is not an issue. Looking at either the new shaped RR , say a 2002 petrol, X5 3.0i or 4.4i or a Cayenne. Do not want horrendous bills but would love another RR, is the newer shaped one less of a headache than we all know the P38 could be? Anything I should be looking out for, service bits (like the cam etc), any suspension probs (like the P38....) etc.

Any help would be appreciated. I will be taking it off road too regularly along tracks for field sports.

Your help would be greatly appreciated. Test drove the X5, liked it, seems solid, no air suss to go wrong, but everyone has one, the porsche is not a real 4x4 but the Tourag could be an option, but would love to have another RR.

I changed from a 1995 P38 to a 2002 4.4HSE with 104,000 miles on the clock just over a year ago.

Since then, I have done 9,000 miles and have had to have around £5,000.00 of repairs done including,

Coolant reservoir replaced
Radiator replaced
Head Gaskets replaced and block skimmed
Heater blender motor replaced
Headlight replaced
ABS Computer replaced
Steering Angle Sensor replaced
Prop Shaft replaced
Oil Filter housing replaced

The majority of the work was done by a main dealer, because it was under warranty, otherwise I would have it done by a less expensive garage.

It still has a heater problem and has just developed a coolant leak.

However, I love it to bits!

Christ, cheers for the reply Sam, £5k of repairs...........eeek! Car looks lovely though! Are most of these becuase of the age? Mileage? Early model issues?

If I was to get one with say 50k on the clock, is that likely to be slightly better?

When do the belts get changed, any major service points etc?

Really there are three option to you.

1. Buy a P38 and do the cosmetic changes with a body kit from Range Over

2. Buy a 2004 L322 model onwards and reap the benefits of some of newer models glitches being ironed out.

3. Buy the cheaper yet very annoying 2002-2003 L322 models and hope to god you buy a good one that hasn't got all the glitches still and needs a bottomless pit of a wallet.

I my case, I think it was the dealer taking the **** and changing things to cure coolant loss until it stopped leaking.

The headlight blew shortly after they had replaced the head gaskets (it wasn't us, honest guv), taking out the ABS computer and steering angle sensor at the same time.

Prop shaft was wear and tear.

I paid £19K for it, which I think was a bargain.

I love driving the car, which is streets ahead of the P38 in terms of design, which I also adored.

If I could afford it, I would buy a brand spanking new one!!!

Thank you for this. I have done the P38 thing now and really wanted a new shape but was worried that the early problems would be costly, I need it to work every day whatever. Hate to say it but I can hear an X5 coming.......................

stear clear of X5 if you want to go off road

Check this to see what I mean.
Porche and toureg are the same chassis and running gear but a big difference in price.
Also stear away from low profile tires.They look good but give ****e ride and no grip on a bit of damp grass

Thanks guys. Still no clearer where to look..............

Still like X5, 30k miles a year means it will be good on road, BMW's are bulletproof too. But still like RR or LRD2

When BMW owned Land Rover they put a proto X5 on the suspension test rig. The suspension broke on the warm up cycle i.e. before the test proper actually started! The L322 passed the test! Enough said.
