HI,

I had a functioning gear box on RR L322 3.6 TDV8 Auto before I jacked up front end to change control arms. I expected some suspension issues on lowering it back but no errors showing. Took it for a test drive and its as though the clutch is slipping and I can smell some not good clutch type smell! The revs go up but not much drive happens. Left it on the driveway for a while, stopped & started a few times, dropped the height to Access height, and it would then drive! Went through all the whole 4x4 range options/settings and suspension up and down before I tested it again. Same thing happened. got 50 yds up the road and revs go up, no or limited drive, went through height settings but no difference this time, though I had not turned it off and on. I also get a slight crunching when moving to Park, even doing it slowly. It's as though a gear is not engaging, is it the transfer box?, as I read about similar but why has/could this happen because I jacked up the front, it must be related to he suspension height - though clearly I don't know. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I need to be able to get it back to MOT garage before my 10 days run out for retest now I have done the control arms..

A crunching sound when moving the lever into Park is usually a sign of something disconnected downstream of the transmission output. It’s caused by the parking pawl ratcheting on the park lock gear, even though the park lock gear should be stationary. This could be caused by an issue with :

• Failed output shaft spline
• Transfer box
• Front or rear propshaft
• Front or rear final drive
• Driveshaft

The most likely is that one of the driveshafts has popped out. If you raise the vehicle to full suspension height and get someone to look underneath (safely, from the side) to check if either of the propshafts is turning when the vehicle is stationary with your foot on the brake when Drive or Reverse is selected.

Thanks thats two votes for a drive shaft, and it's entirely possible as swapping out the two control arms could have done that I guess as I was pushing and pulling on the wheel hub. Now two dumb questions...

1. If its come out how best to put it back without taking off all the control arms and track rod arm? Is there a trick to it?

2. Other than the symptoms I am getting is there an obvious way to see if its come out as hard to see?
