Hi

Driving home from work, passenger side wiper failed, driver side carried on working.

The only inspection I could do in the rain is that the passenger wiper turned freely, so I assume it's not connected to the linkage.

Is it likely it can be rejoined to the linkage or will I need to replace the linkage?

Most likely the rod has popped off due to wear. You can buy clips to hold the socket joint together and rod sets on eBay...

Clips are about £4 each on eBay and they work extremely well, had one on my Freelander for at least 18 months.
