Hi. I know this has been asked before (I did a search) but I'm considering a decat and couldn't find a definitive answer as to whether it's worth it. Are there any performance or MPG benefits
I know there maybe MOT implications

I know it's been asked but bare with me

It is illegal to run a vehicle on the road without a cat if it was manufacture in or after 1993.
 
Probably no point in doing it, it'll still be an oil burner. You'll just be filling up the tank a day later than usual, if anything.
 
Will save you a couple of mpg and give you a few extra bhp but not enough to make it worth ****ing about taking it off then putting it back for mot then off again ect..
 
The buldge on the down pipe is a soot collector a very very early type of dpf filter it catches the soot particles in urban driving to minimise the pollution and then when it gets opened up on the motorways etc it kicks it out the back away from the public!!!!!!!
 
So Matt1987 with what you've just said if I drive round town all day then go for a stretch On the motorway all that collected soot is now heading for my CAT and blocking it over time?

It is not a particle filter it is a cat. Later cars have both a cat and a particle filter they have different functions.
 
Ok Wammers thank you for that. If the MPG is going to be 2 or 3 MPG more it might be worth it I guess. I'll check If it is legal for diesels or not first.

Just drive more slowly than you usually do, and drive only when you really have to. You'll save a hell of a lot more money doing that than butchering your car.

But, I guess that's the wrong answer and you're really just after a few more BHP under the pretext of gaining MPG.
 
Cats on petrols from 1992

cats on diesels from 2001

Newer diesels have a cat and a dpf some manufacturers combine them in the same space some split them
