One of my first jobs when I started as a trainee mechanic was to change the engine oil on a Vauxhall Victor unfortunately I had no idea what I was doing and ripped the sump plug out of the sump. Torque wrenches were rarely used in those days, except for head tightening, a clout round the head from the foreman soon taught you how tight something should be. I would suggest that for the inexperienced DIYer the use of a torque wrench could save you time and money until you gain sufficient experience.

I do for this as I always overtighten bolts. What feels tight to one person can feel very loose to another & if it's a fragile fastening I use a torque wrench.

which is fine ,he was saying he didnt have t/wrench that went lower enough and he had obviously tightened sump plug up by hand ,why dont you set t/wrench and then try by hand till you learn how it feels when bolt is correctly tightened,its a skill that someone with a vehicle should know ,you might be out without your book one day ,presumably you can do it for hose clips screws etc ,std spanners come in sizes relative to bolt torque
