Discos are very capable and comfortable off road and really not expensive, a 300tdi kitted out for off-roading with little rust shouldn't cost much more than £1000 with a full mot and tax.

That would be exactly the kind of thing I'd be after.

I know this might be sacrilege, and I am prepared to wash my mouth out, but why does it have to be a Landrover as a cheap off road toy for you to build up your experience ?
Sportraks and Vitaras are cheap as chips - look at how many turn up on pay and play days ?

Nice sentiment... But I'm seeking to off-road, not style hair...

I took my RRC to Salisbury last week end.
Cruised there and back at between 50 and 70mph.
Went everywhere everyone else did, with no major mods (no snorkle, A/T tyres). Yeah OK the plugs and/or leads got wet, she didn't break down, and they are due for a change anyway.
I used half a tank of petrol door to door.
if you include buying the car, tax and insurance and the little bits I have done to it, my Classic owes me just over £500.

Doesn't seem to be much knocking around at that price though... Unless anybody knows someone who's selling one?

have a look on ebay... there's a couple nearish to me that are going cheap with off road tyres/bits n pieces on them going quite cheap! Bit rough round the edges but adverts state they're reasonably solid
