Ok, so after my first off-road experience in my P38, I've decided that (eventually) I want to keep an off-road 'toy' that I just use for fun, and on the odd occasion that the P38 is off the road (ok, ok... The frequent occasions that the P38 is off the road!!) As I discovered, the Rangie is perfectly capable in the rough stuff, way more so than I right now... It's just all the cleaning, fixing, swapping of wheels, etc (it's my daily driver) that could become a royal pain in the hoop and put me off this new-found hobby...

So... With that in mind (and funds being limited) - what would YOU go for? It needs to be road-worthy, and able to do the occasional school / shopping run, so it needs at least 5 seats - but won't be a 'daily driver', so some pain can be endured.

A 90 would be ideal... But frankly, one in decent nick goes for way too much money... at least as far as I can see. Disco's are MUCH cheaper, and with a bit of fettling, almost as capable (for my abilities, at least!) - with V8s seemingly alot cheaper than diesels. I don't mind the horrendous fuel consumption as it'll only be subject to occasional use. BUT - are the V8s ALOT more prone to breaking in deep water?

Thoughts?

I rekon a disco or series are the only 2 options if yer on a tight budget.

Obviously a disco will be more refined but a series will be more basic from the point of fixing/maintaining.

not if u get a 200 tdi disco with no elektickery stuff on it,pretty basic:D

I was rather surprised by the capability of my standard 300tdi disco... great value for money as well!

Already started changing things though :D it now has no carpets, towbar is coming off tomorrow and I'm hunting down any rust before it gets a lift kit! I'd definitely recommend a snorkel if you get a disco though as mine pulled in half of salisbury plains into its air box on saturday!

Looked at your post for a while....... Deep in thought...... It dont mater what you get you will still want to polish it. Sorry

I know this might be sacrilege, and I am prepared to wash my mouth out, but why does it have to be a Landrover as a cheap off road toy for you to build up your experience ?
Sportraks and Vitaras are cheap as chips - look at how many turn up on pay and play days ?

I'd go for a 200/300tdi disco if you can find one without too much rust. It will be best value for money by far if you're on a budget. That budget will all go out the window when you get the upgrading bug ! Lol

Look longer - the army are selling ALL of their green fleet (yes ALL) which means there are circa 2000 Defenders to be sold off.

Whithams are the sellers Auctions - MOD Sales guide prices are very low so auction is the best way. The direct sales team are asking over the top (in my opinion) although they do have some excellent examples. Most of them are in reasonable condition (there are a few nails), all are low ratio transfer box and HD diffs etc, all the standard ones are 2.5 NA's (there are some TDi's in specialist vehicles but they tend to be expensive).

They make a perfect off-road toy ..... no mats/carpets, no door linings, if they get dirty you pressure wash them inside and out :)
Like this one clicky

Or if you want some real off road action what about one of these clicky - permanent 4WD, hi/low transfer + 5 gears, diff lock = yeah baby :):):)

school run

if they in child seats gotta be forward facing seats

go the disco way

I would advise a 200 tdi. Shorter the better - (Ain't there a three door version?)

Simple to repair, cheap to buy which means you have few extra quid left over for mods.

Discos are very capable off road vehicles - and if you break it... it is not too expensive to fix. Spares are in abundant supply too which helps.

Expect to count the hours spent off roading - then double the time needed for servicing and repairs! lol

I knew it wouldn't take too long until you started making changes :D Kiss goodbye to the contents of your wallet

Wash ya mouth out.. none of emn are std and most fall apart or fall over. they are great if you don't mind killing one a weekend and haven't paid more than £100 for em. otherwise they are ****e and useless for long term laning.

:D Just couldn't help myself! Looking for a reasonably priced snorkel now that fits an abs model... safari one are only £260

there's a copy on ebay that fits non-abs models for £120 which sound much better for my wallet! Dunno how much "modifying" it'll need to fit mine though :/

Series are great fun and easy to do anything to. You can pick them up for £500 --> £1000.

Discos are very capable and comfortable off road and really not expensive, a 300tdi kitted out for off-roading with little rust shouldn't cost much more than £1000 with a full mot and tax.
