Hey graham keep at it mate, To be double sure where ya tdc is remove rocker cover and check your position with the rocker arms!! I recently did a fuel pump on mine and had a daft issue which is exactly the same as what you are having! Not sure how or why but it took three attempts to correct! However on the third after timing everything individually it worked, be warned that it only seems to take a fraction of movment on the crankshaft for the flywheel timing pin (or screwdriver) to not fit in correctly! Another tip get some white paint on a screwdriver and mark flywheel locking slot with it! Every little helps!

cheers mate, hopefully it'll stop raining for long enough tonight for me to have another go.
MAybe an obvious question, but which valves are compressed by rockers at TDC?
I cant do a visual check from flywheel as its an auto (timing hole is mounted on the side of the bellhousing which you can only get to by feel).
Being a skin flint Im not buying the timing kit for the sake of 1 pin, so I picked up a wading plug yesterday with the intention to drill a 5mm hole through the centre - but its solid and made out of hardened steel!!

....so.. stoopid confession time:
I been using a 9mm drill bit to lock the fuel pump instead of 10 which I didn't realise made a HUUGE difference in terms of amount of play in the sprocket.
Next step another evening in torrential rain to fit me new rad after poking a hole in the current one. Cheers for the pointers chaps
