Hi guys,

Fitted my new diff this morning along with new diff mounts, pretty simple job really. Filled it with oil (Texaco Diff EPX80/90 API GL5)

Getting a stange rumbling/gear rotational knock when I freewheel the rear hubs though. Is this normal? Dont want to put it all back together and road test if im getting wird noises at this stage of the rebuild!

i would be sending that back,its fecked.where did you get it? is it new or a recon? only intrested as thats my next job,another diff my output bearings knackered
 
it's a brand spanking new one, I've been told all diffs make this noise?!!
anyone else jacked up there car and spun both rear wheels please? any noises?

not sure where sound is coming from as the crown and pinion are stationary it can't be them..got a warranty on it but won't have a car for days if it's knackered! I'll put wheels
on and test drive it first..why do I not have any luck!!
 
shouldnt make noise at all,id be very surprised if you take that a run and its not noisy, i presume you are holding the input shaft from turning and turning one of the output shafts?

well the props connected so the input shaft is unable to move - im rotating the wheel which is connected to one output shaft, the other output shaft rotates in harmony in the opposite direction.

Just taken it for a road test....STILL GOT THE SAME NOISE AND VIBRATIONS AT 55mph!!! AARRGGGGGHHHHH

So, new diff and bushes fitted have made no difference! grrrrr I've run out of things to try now.
I did notice that my back box has started to part at the rear seam..maybe thats causing the vibration as the air hits it at 55mph.

I have tried recording the noise but cant get a decent clear recording of it.
 
well its probably the pinion gears in the diff,but i would take the complete propshaft off front to back including vcu and run it in 2 wheel drive if it still making noises and vibrating it must be diff,just cause its new dont mean its ok

already tried that beofre i fitted the diff...remove whole prop and no noise at all...quiet as a mouse...put new vcu and prop bearings back on....grumbling/whirring noise comes back!!...its either strain on the IRD making it noisy when prop is attached on one of the new bearings on my vcu is goofed...cant think what else it could be!?
 
It's normal to be able to hear the rotation of the diff gearing in that situation. That said it does sound loud in the recording probably just due to the microphone being so close.

Cheers for the reassurance Chaser - thats exactly what the engineering firm told me that sold me the diff. No excssive road noise from diff at all so im searching the past posts to se if anyone actually fixed their vibration at 55mph after changing the vcu an bearings...I may have to change my way of thinking in that perhaps my vibration and the growl/bearing/wobwob noise are unrelated :confused:
 
is it a KV6? cos they have a VCU with a damper. I dont think the 1.8 has that damper. Yours aint fallen orf?

Thanks Mad Hat Man, mine is the TD4 and the damper is all present and correct - it came with the new vcu.

just checked drive shafts, all very tight with no play at all, and the prop cv is as tight as a ducks ass too....looking more and more like a trnsfer or gearbox bearing...

whats the best way to diagnose a bearing fault (not just wait for it to fail).
Im oathed to change the IRD or get it overhauled unless I know for sure.

Noise started ever since the new vcu was put on alon with new support bearings.

Already spent £2500 on it since I got it the other month (2003 TD4 73000km)!!!

Just checked rave. Only 1.8 has the damper.

Rave ses:

Torsional Damper (1.8 K Series Models Only)
The torsional damper reduces vibration from the propeller shafts. The damper consists of a rubber membrane bonded
between an outer ring and an inner hub. Three bolts secure the inner hub to the output shaft of the VCU.

Um. That would be the logical answer. What ever the 1.8's doing, it's all joined together with the ird and gearbox as one big lump. Must either be a vibration thing or a resonance issue? The prop's seem to have a balance small plate of metal on them. that must be considered ok for the other engines. Strange only one engine model needs the damper...
 
I sympathise with ya mate. After spending alot of money on my td4 I have decided to get rid of it due to the continuouse droning noise coming from somewhere. Does my head in. similar noise as your getting. Now trading it in for a normal car. My td4 is mint and only getting £1500 for it trade.
