I see that the MOD army are selling off their fleet of landrover 90 defenders etc my question is their engine 2.5 td nia spec etc what chassis is that based on ?? same as 200 tdi or different? also what is the pros and cons of buying one from them ?

where you see this?
was looking on the mod sales websites the other night, tender prices from 2.5k guide price, but they do also do normal sales, was going to ring and ask how much

dbout its their whole fleet or anything tho, just spare ones, prob get toa certain age then sold and replaced

armoured snatch 110`s look awsome, but petrol and heavy...

mate was saying they are a good bet in terms of mechanicly sound, as theyve always been serviced and repaired on the button and looked after in that sense and always got to be ready to be used etc

I have an ex MOD 90 ragtop. I bought from direct sales and paid £3k. It was immaculate as far as maintanance and corrosion were concerned. Obviously abused a bit by squaddies but otherwise sound. The NA engine was a little slow for me so I put a 200Tdi with Allard stage 4 and now have 170bhp in a ragtop!!

I changed the seats from then squabs to defender ones from Exeter. I also fitted power steering.

Overall very happy with what I have now.

Unless you are referring to Defender XD's (I know the 90 isn't as well used nowadays but I wasn't aware they were selling the fleet just yet) they will all be NA D, the MOD stayed with this engine when the TD & 200TDi were introduced and it was only with the XD (Wolf) that the 300TDi was brought into service.
Chassis is the same as a civy one.
As long as you know what you are looking for it is still possible to get a good vehicle which has had a lot of money spent on it just prior to being cast, that said it is also very easy to end up with a real dog which will cost a lot of money to get properly sorted so as usual it is a case of buyer beware.
They are very basic and give you a (very) blank canvas with which to work on or if you like basic, a very simple vehicle to live with. The engine is no ball of fire but get a good one and it will go on for ever and return a decent 27-28MPG.
Unfortunately the days of going to the auctions and buying direct from the MOD are long gone but you still get a choice from Wytham's however I think the MOD now make the vehicles earn their living more than they did so they have see more service than those sold in the 80's, 90's & early 2K.

MOD vehicles always used to be cast (sold) on the basis of their whole life cost - they have a budget and an expected service life and are cast when either the budget is exhausted or they reach the end of their service life , whichever is sooner. That is why some MOD vehicles are cast having had replacement engines or gearboxes only months before.
It is always useful to get the military history, some units give their vehicles a harder or softer life.

wow good response and good topics covered Airways did u have to move the mounts to accept the 200tdi ?? yes I thought the ARMY would service and looked after it but worked it hard yes but I have disco 200tdi which I could put in there I just need the defender body and chassis and etc etc

No, I did not move anything. The 200 dropped in without changing anything, it even connected to the existing exhaust. Although I am putting the 200 exhaust on with a centre box removal pipe.

It is a doodle to fit and really transformed it. The Allard Intercooler also made a huge difference. It goes like stink.

I put new front seats in as well to replace the military squab seats. Very comfy!!

flea bay was certainly my friend. Mine was in mint nick and Withams let me choose the one I wanted from a batch of about 50. So i just inspected and chose one that was mechanically sound.

Very happy with my beast!! It won't of course stop me from modifying it!!

Airways. Thanks. So if I can get 90 2.5 td from mod. It will be the same as200 tdi. Perfect. Thanks. Will have to be careful and check it is not td5 !!

It won't be a TD5 from the MOD, they only used the NA D in the early 90 fleet.
XD models will be 300TDi but you won't be buying one of them for under £10K (or more) and the V8 was only fitted to the 130's but since the change to the single fuel policy even these are long gone.

how easy was it to fit the power steering to the mod defender ? can I use the disco 200tdi power steering system to the defender from mod ??

Ive just been up to Withams and picked up a straight 110. They have plenty of solid land rovers at the moment. The snatch land rovers are pretty tatty to be honest. The normal 90/110 start at about 2500 but i did see a few tatty ones that im sure you can bring them down on price if you want a project. They only have a few on their website but have loads on stock just sitting there to take your pick

Lucifus. Did u pick it up on truck or did u pay them to re register and get tax and mot etc ?? My problem now is decide 90 or 110

You pick the land rover and can take as it comes. Or you can pay 500 extra. For this the register it, Mot it, tax it for a year and fit number plates ready for you to drive away. The money also includes pre mot check.

Airways and lucifus. What gearbox do these mods defender use ?? Lt77 ?? Just wondering. Cos u both know I got 200tdi disco. I could put the 200!tdi in but gearbox ? Or leave the mod one in and swop the transfer box etc

Im pretty sure the MOD defenders just have gearbox the same as civvy version of the same year. They had some there with R380 and 2.5 NA. My 110 was built Dec 1993 and has LT77. I have also already had a discovery 200tdi bolted up to the gearbox. The transfer box on my 110 is 1.6 so gearing is farily low. Going to get a 1.4 though at some point in the not too distant future if I can find a good used one. Page 5 of my recent thread has my engine conversion http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/goodbye-90-hello-110-project-164878-5.html

Standard LT77. I put a 200TDi into mine straight onto the existing gear box.
