Hi,
Would any one be able to advise or help yet again? I redid the timing and the manifold wasn't red on tickover anymore but after driving it a short distance and stopped to check the manifold was red yet again? Rab
 
I have just done a search and found the following,,
not specific to the Freelander but is should be the same for all motors..

I have seen this problem 3 times,
once it was because the distributor was in wrong and the ignition timing was way off,
the second time i saw the problem i found a bad Throttle Position Sensor.
The third time i found that the timing chain had jumped a few teeth and thrown off the valve timing.
A clogged exhaust system will not cause this problem as i have seen numerous (completely)
clogged Catalytic Converters and the chief symptoms are: lack of power or no start.
An overheating motor will not cause this problem either.
I've lost count of how many overheated motors I've seen and that has never caused a glowing exhaust.
I would begin by using a timing light and check the base timing,
then scan the motor to see if you have a bad Throttle Position Sensor.

I have heard that it is possibly the MAP or Oxygen sensor at fault..

Tuff one to get to the bottom of without chasing it with money..
Is it running well or is it lacking or lumpy??
 
Hi,
Since the head gasket was done and all the uprated parts fitted its running sweeter an smoother than before, distributor cant be taken out and ignition timing is set by ecu. Checked timing again spot on, will check Throttle Position Sensor. thanks Rab.

have had this before on a ford fiesta,wrong sparkplugs given from our storeman,short run and manifold was glowing red
 
My own Freelander does this. Hold the revs around 3k-3.5k and after a short while it will start to glow red.
My car is running spot on (now) with no faults stored, starts and drives fine etc. You have to remember what the combustion temperatures are inside the engine, which is going straight into the manifold. I'm not surprised they glow red hot!

I should add that it has done this with 2 sets of plugs etc

Under load at higher revs a tubular manifold will glow. Glowing at idle is'nt so common but that doesn't mean it won't. Although I've never seen it.

Maybe fairly well down to how thick the metal is the manifold is made of, if its fairly thin it may well glow..... although likewise I've never seen one glow at idle.. i guess if thickness was an issue they would all do it..
 
I havent checked them after driving.

I do know for a fact that, whilst stationary with the bonnet open. If you rev the car at 3.5k+ rpm for a little while. The exhaut manifold with glow red. Its normally the pipes going into the pre-cat which do this.
 
I used to run a Cooper 'S' (proper Mini, not BMW !), 1340cc with lcb exhaust, '731' (Rally) cam, Weber 45 dcoe carb - the manifold used to glow on that as well, fortunately the heat-shields were very efficient!
