I have RR L322 2004 Vogue with the 4.4 M62 Engine. I have been fighting ticking noise for over a year now and cant seem to find the solution.

I have already checked the timing chain guides, replaced timing chain tensioner and rebuilt the Vanos units and replaced Vanos solenoids and tried different oil grades but still have ticking sound at idle.

The ticking seems to come from the top end of aft left side and sounds like a stuck hydraulic lifter..

Can anybody recommend a independant RR specialsit with experience of the M62 engine ? I am based south of London.

I seem to recall @holidaychicken experiencing the same annoyance.

How is camshaft end-float controlled in these?

I've been looking up here in Leicestershire for such a person but no one, not even the BMW independents want to get involved.
I am resigned to sorting my own engine myself at this point in time...........

We have just rebuilt one of these...i say we i mean my very talented mechanic john BUT he is mobile not work shop based.
The trouble is a job like this can take for ever and take up workshop space which is why no one wants todo it.

Even if it gets stripped down there is no garuntee it cures your fault.



When i say rebuilt we fitted a s/h bottom end complete head rebuild, chains guides blah blah then refitted it.
Previous owner cooked it running without coolant or oil. Runs like a dream now

I am waiting to hear from CPCPE.com. they are in Buckinghamshire and specilise in BMW. I will let you know if they want to attempt my car...

Tappets can fail in the M62 i've replaced all of them in an M62 i rebuilt, chasing a ticking noise after I rebuilt it..

Best test is to remove the cams and give the tappets a tap with your finger, they should be firm, if they're soft and bounce around you've fund the dead tappet(s).

2 of the above were dead after a brief spat with low oil pressure.
