Hi guys.
I was just driving home with my better half after a day out.
2 miles before we got home I pulled away from some lights in first gear, I felt the clutch bite then there was a grinding noise and started rolling backwards as I was trying to go forwards. I pulled the handbrake on and that didn't work. I tried all gears, nothing. Tried low box, still nothing. High and low with diff lock, still nothing.
Oddly, I managed to get home by crawing along in 1st / 2nd gear with the now defunkt handbrake on!
A fault like this will def be easy to pinpoint on the forum.
I mean, how many things can go a knacker where you can only get power to the wheels with your handbrake on?
Oh, by the way, it aint the disco. I now have a 94 Defender 110 300tdi.

rear diff etc ,diff lock wouldnt seem to work and applying hand brake while it wont hold vehicle with no drivein rear axle would enable you to crawl home by holding rear output shaft giving some torque to front wheels

Rear diff? Hmm, thinkin bout it the whirring grindy noise was coming from the back half of the car. It has been making a thump when taking up drive for a month or two, woner if it's got owt to do with that......
How do I tell if it's the diff?

apply hand brake if much of it left ,jack one rear wheel up it shouldnt turn

I woulda said rear half shafts, but when mine went, i could still move with difflock on. Not sure this adds much, but just putting it out there so brainier perople than me (thats most then) might comment further

defender 110 is likely to be worn drive member and shaft so probably right mr boomer,presumably his isnt going into diff lock

so would the light on his dash which (supposedly) indcates when its in diff lock still come on in that situation?

light is put on by selector itself so if light comes on should indicate diff locked

I thought I'd tried it in diff lock, but may not have done. I was in a bit of a mood at the time and was about to do a Basil Fawlty on it. So cant remember 100%.
There is a splined shaft sticking protruding from the rear l/h wheel by about an inch, maybe slightly more. All the other wheels.have a little plastic cap on where this thing is sticking out. Could this have popped out an knocked the cap off?
I'll try it in diff lock in the mornin.

looks like the left hand half shaft has gone west. try it (briefly) in difflock, my guess it will move on the front two wheels. reason its not moving when not in difflock is cos all the drives going the path of least resistance which is to the wheel with the knacked half shaft

that must be a worn half shaft through worn drive member ,fix that ,ftc1724 is shaft for rh side ftc1725 is shaft for lh side ,drive member is ruc105200, cap is ftc943

Potentially, I would say the fact that you were able to crawl home with the handbrake on indicates something rear of the hand brake as stated.

If the half shaft had popped out then this would cause all of the probs you have mentioned but a cannot understand how it could have in the way you have said, as far as I know from experience with 10 spline only, the flanges push on, the thing stopping them pushing further is the fact that the splines don't run the full length, then there would be a circling stopping them disappearing inside the axle.

The only way to tell is to pull em out starting with that one, with a bit of luck that one is the culprit

Can I relace the half shaft, or is it a new rear axle?
Think it might be a job for the nice two fellas at ultimate land rover if it's too big a job for myself.

replace rear half shaft - 5 bolts - 20 minutes if it goes well.
dont forget the new gasket.

6 bolts, parts stated above plus gasket and sealant, 20 minutes if you don't need to take wheels of which I assume you don't, or 25 min if you do. **** easy cheapish job
