Thanks for the help and advice guys.
I have spoken to couple of experts and they have said that the wheels and tyres will increase the where on the bearings, so they need to be checked and greased on a regular basis to stop this happening again.
The bearings have not been checked in 2 years since I have had the Disco. So I need to add this to my service list.
The cause is the bearing has failed which has applied excessive force to the half shaft and it has also failed which caused the loss of drive.
Swapped the half shaft, bearing and drive shaft out of the spare axle so all good no quick fixes.
The input and help today has been very useful and also confirmed I know more than I thought, and I should follow my instinct more often.
Also I must be psychic to leave the newly acquired spare axle in the back!!!!!

I think somebody missed out an extra thankyou for Drewster seeming as he did a 60 mile round trip and gave up several hours of his time to help.....
