Hey Guys!!
Hope someone can help. I have just tried to drive my freelander of the drive and all 4 wheels appear to have locked up!!
I cant go forwards or backwards, it feels like brakes are stuck on(that kind of feeling) I tried to make it go, but nothing happened!!
Any ideas on this, and especially what cost could be involved!!:(
 
Not sure whether a freelander has the same handbrake setup as a defender but if it has sometimes the shoes in the drum can stick on and not retract. The short term cure is to release the handbrake and give a few blows to the jhandbrake drum with a lump hammer!! Make sure though the wheels are chocked or engine off and in gear etc
If it keeps sticking the expander unit needs cleaning or replacing (expensive).
All of the above though refers to a defender/disco and only relevent if your freelander has the same h/brake setup!
 
jack up a front wheel and see if it rotates (out of gear but with handbrake on for safety), if it does not it could well be your brake servo stuck on, handbrake is only operational on the rear wheels.
 
Ffs Stiggo, Its A Freelander, It'll Be Either The Ird Or The Vcu Or Both, Its A Common Fault With Em, Ask Mondo, He's The Freelander Expert ;)
 
I had a similar problem - turned out that the friction material on the rear shoe had come away from the metal and had fallen to the lowest part of the drum, wedging itself between the drum and the other shoe.

Removing the rear hub for inspection revealed the problem.
If you jack up a wheel - do any move at all?

Thanks for all your replies, i jacked the thing up, and both front wheels are not going anywhere!!
What does this mean now??
 
dont think they need to be - providing it was out of gear, both fronts should turn ok, but stiff. Handbrake (as sed before) only works on two rear wheels. providing VCU aint siezed solid, fronts shud turn.
 
piece of **** - do a search for Mondo mode - easiest short term solution is to remove front prop apparently. VCU still gubbered but drive from front to rear is disabled. A lot of the guys on here do it during the summer anyway (cept Mondo who couldnt be bothered to refix it;)) - I am lead to believe car is quicker, more responsive and better fuel consumption. That will give yu a driveable car to sort out at your leisure.

if yu wanna be safe - let yo insurance co know - but they mite frown apon it:(

Rac towed it away this morning, well dragged it onto the lorry, gone to the garage for repair, will let you all know the outcome....
 
Got the car back from the garage today, they stripped the thing down, found nothing wrong and gave me it back, telling me 'if' it happens again to call them!!
At least it was free!!!
 
Why was the VCU suspected?

I don't get it?

Are you sure the front dics hadn't binded after a few days of damp or lack of use? Though as I am typing this, I'm thinking the handbake is on the rear...

You thought the front wheels wouldn't turn when jacked up - was the car in gear?
