Help me if you can I'm feeling down!

My Ex Mod 90 N/a has sat unmoved for nearly two months as I'm in the M25 cameras everywhere!. I did think write to DVLA with the window in the side - estate - option but no doubt it will takre ages and get thrown back via the chassis number. I don't need a huge V8, not that fussed about diesel, so CAN I retrofit a 2.5 petrol from an early 90 or is there a similiar petrol that will fit nice and easy and couple up with everything?

You're right. The only diesels that are OK for the LEZ are the TD5's (not early ones) or the Puma. But you would have to register the vehicle as being to the required Euro standard. That sounds like a can of worms. The only tdi that will comply with LEZ is the 110 County Station Wagon. So I think petrol is the only way to go but you are still going to have to deal with the DVLA and get it registered accordingly.

What would happen if you fitted a hardtop with side windows, and some rear seats ? You would need to re-register as a station wagon and no doubt need a lot of photographic evidence ready but could it them qualify as an estate ? Might be worth a call to TFL or whoever adminsters the LEZ and check with them on a hypothetical basis - and its a lot cheaper than a new engine

just thinking out the box eons ago there used to be adapters about to fit v6 ford engines into series.....if you can find one of the adapter plates you may be able to attach a ford engine

or what about the rover sd1 that had 3.5 v8 or a 2.6 petrol .... would one of the 2.6s if you can find one fit onto a lr gearbox.

any other 4x4 that you can lift engine and box out of and just mod the propshafts to fit?

sell the ninety and buy a disco is probably the easiest answere or move tother side of the m25

You can't just fit seats in the back, they won't let you do it. All to do with insurance & all that ****. I know people that have tryed.
Petrol is the only way.

There is a thread somewhere, do a search, about getting your defender reregistered as an estate but looked a ton of hassle, it is mad thou how a 200tdi disco can get past the lez but a 200tdi defender of the same year cannot also goes for other types of lump, just goes to show what thick bastids enforce these laws and what dopy pricks we have in government.

My td5 90 can't go in either as it was a commercial, yet a CSW exactly same spec engine / emission wise can, its all to do with chassis Nos, but its all bollocks

Nope,

forget that, just looked at costings FFS!

Approximate cost of buying and fitting a filter
The cost of buying and fitting abatement equipment will vary depending on the age, type and usage patterns of your vehicle.
Buying a filter will cost between £1,800 and £3,500 for most vans, minibuses and other specialist vehicles and between £3,500 and £7,000 for HGVs, buses and coaches.
Fitting costs are often included in the purchase price, and are generally between £200 and £500 for vans, minibuses and other specialist vehicles and between £300 and £500 for HGVs, buses and coaches.

best bet is go by a disco 200 doosel 7 seater estate car!

if you want a van, the fold the seats down and fit blackout film inside rear windows...

thats exactly what I do... 300tdi disco, all the seats fitted, just folded down so I can use it as a van, in and out of london as I please :)

Fantastic - next question wher can I lay my hands on a decent 2.5 petrol to stick it, and if I want some trouble free motoring what am I likely to pay for the lump?

Thanks

Bought mine from ebay, £55, with all the bits.
Stripped it down in my garage, fitted new rings, mains, big ends and gave it a de coke.

They are fitted with a webber carb, which is very very fussy about getting clean fuel, make sure you use an in line fuel filter.

Its not that hard to get the log book changed to an estate (non commercial), you need to show rear windows and seats and you need to show that this is how the 'standard' estates were. I have done similar changing an old VW commercial vehicle to a motorhome, as long as you show the conversion has been done to an adequate standard and you document it all then they will do it... it may take a bit of back and forth letter writing but it can be done...

Alternatively fit a V8 and LPG!!

Just checked my V5 and mine's registered as an Estate body type already .. I presume that means it's OK to go into the LEZ?
