Hi Chaps

I have some very good friends out here in France who have just started experiencing a loud rumbling between 58mph & 62mph only during acceleration with a 1994 300tdi.
Local Land Rover Dealer said that it was a wheel bearing with out even looking at the vehicle another garage after taking front prop off, noise still there, taking rear prop off no noise has deduced that it's the transfer box that's knacked 3000euro

( £2000)

including a new clutch.

So the questions are does this sound right?,what would the consequences be of doing nothing and carrying on using it with the radio turned up?How much can you get a transfer box for and what kind of a job is it to change?

Thanks in advance

Jason

I picked up a good transfer box off ebay for £100.00, out of an auto so even better as no transmission clunk from changing gear, fitted it in my daughters 90 with "yella" assisting and it took us 4 hours from when the 90 drove in to when it drove out. Gearbox does not need to come out to change it.

From what you're saying I'd deduce that it's the rear prop thats knackered, but then I can't see it. Are the UJs OK.

That's the problem I aint seen it either Grunt:confused:
I think that they will be getting it back tomorrow as they have been worded that putting £2k into a 94 disco dunt make sense no gaurantee either that the transfer is at fault.

Stig what are the tell tale signs of a knackered transfer ?

Just add that the noise is coming from gearbox area!

Does it make the same noise in high or low, is it speed or engine revs related. Does the noise stop or change if you press the clutch. If it is the transfer box then it could be something simple like the output shaft bearings which are relatively cheap and easy to fix.

Grunt how can you check if it's the transfer out put shaft bearings?

Hopefully they will be getting it back tomorrow and we will be able to have a slide underneath and have a check.

Rear ones not so easy if it's reeeeely knackered the handbrake drum will move up and down, side to side. other wise you'll have to check for play by taking the drum off, and waggling the output shaft.

I wouldn't give up on the transfer box that easily they're as tough as reeeely tough things. Judging by the state of the front output shaft seal area, mine had been run without any oil in it for several thousand miles! just renewed the shaft bearing and seal and it's like new.

Thanks a lot Grunt, that's good to know.

We will see what happens tomorrow.

Just got my Disco back home, no problems aside from the auto rear view mirror doesn't have any power, and after having a good look around underneath, the transfer box seems to have a bit of a leak (so much for the seller saying he doesn't have any oil spots on his drive!) - lots of drips of oil, tho when stationary it doesn't seem to leak a lot, just the odd drip from what is already on the outer casing of the box. Will have to find the fill plug and check the level, tho it isn't making any untoward noises (yet!). At some point I will have to try and figure out where it is leaking from. Anyone got suggestions for the right oil, and is it worth adding a Forte treatment to the transfer box?

Jason - had a look on eBay myself the other day and transfer boxes are going for peanuts. I also found a site that did re-con ones for around 400 quid, tho no doubt you can probably get them a bit cheaper than that if you search around.

Hypoy 90 for the transfer box though I use 80-90 'cos it's what I can get without hunting round. Mine leaks just a few blobs, I've had British bikes for years and was proud of the fact that I kept them leak free but the bloody Landies beaten me, can't seem to stop 'em!

i nevva mind a car wot leaks a little - coz yu replenish the oil on a regular basis - helps to keep it clean.

Fill plug's half way up the rear of the case, should need a 13mm socket wrench (square sectioned sticky innee thingy) to get it out, or a 1/2" drive will fit. I'd get it warmed up, drain it & refill it if you dunt know how old the oil is in it. Can't do any harm.

If you drain it you should replace the washer on the drain plug, might stop some of yer leak too.

Hi Matt I was wondering if you had got back, bring her round somtime and we can have a crawl underneath:D

Back to business!

Got the old girl back from the garage,Test drive:This is a speed related bearing noise nothing to do with revs, starts at approx 55mph to about 65mph as soon as you back off the throttle the rumble noise stops.Tried it in low box, diff lock sound as a pound.Dived underneath all oil levels are good yanked around on all the props,UJ's no movement. Then I put a grease gun on rear UJ's and as usual couldn't get any greese in there not having a pressure grease gun and that but however the front UJ on to the diff spat grease out all over the place!!!Although I can't find any play in it I would like to think that the fact that grease is coming out of all four needle bearing caps it's not healthy as for the other UJ on the front prop couldn't get grease gun on nipple.

What do reckon Grunt,Stig,Chaps? Try a new prop shaft? Got to start somewhere eh!Could it be just a prop shaft a like to think so what a saving on a £2000 for a transfer box qoute eh!

Sounds good! Will be coming Noirt way next week, prob Wed or Thurs to browse the depot ventes you showed me, so will pop in then if that is OK with you?

Got back Tuesday night late, but been flat out getting the house ready for my parents who arrived this afternoon. Typically after all the great weather we've had, it is chucking it down today!

Matt

Replace uj's on rear prop first, unless you want to go down the route of a new rear prop. Have you tried removing the rear prop yourself and driving it or taking the garages word for it? If the noise is still present with the prop removed try removing the transmission brake drum and try again, its not even the rubber drive coupling at the back of the prop?

I have just been told by the blonde one that she did all the work and we just made coffee and tea all afternoon.

Wot Stig sed about removing the prop. About grease coming out of all four bearings at least you know it's getting to all four If it was coming out of less, then are the others getting greased? Thats how mine started when it finally went the grease hole through the spider was blocked solid. I've still got my money on it being the UJs, but you say it's sound when driving it in low box. Is that at the same speed?

Yer a pair of tarts having milk in yer coffee.

There is no knocking, clanking, farting or any other noise for that matter except for when you get up to 55mph there is wheerrrrring, rumbly bearing noise coming from underneath the centre console and forward kind of area:confused:

Grunt you ever tried doing 55mph in low box?
Correct me if I'm wrong but if I take each prop off in turn the only way I'm going to get drive is to lock the diff-yeh? and driving up to 55mph with the diff lock on is a bit bloody stupid-No?

It's just come to light that the rubber damper on the rear prop was well knackered and has just been changed,I'm guessing here but is it possible that because of realy excessive wear in the damper the prop or the rear out put bearing on the Transfer box has taken a hammering-Does also comfirm what the garage seid about noise not being apparent with rear prop off.
