Morning all,

My Landy hasn't been driven more than 2 miles in the past 10+ years. The oil on the diff casing, is this any to worry about?

Cheers

Will

i wouldn't panic about it as long as there's oil still inside it, i've seen far worse oil stains on daily drivers

just had a thought, whip that breather off and make sure it's clear, rattles and you can blow through it and do the same for the front axle

there's a drain plug under the axle to unscrew, the diff should have a filler/level plug in the side of it

simples ;)

Oily diff case is often caused by a leaking pinion seal where the oil is blown backwards as you drive. Not a problem if the leak is small and the level is topped up but it's easy to replace especially if you can get at it from the top!

Do yourself a favor and do it. Odds are the seal's gone hard (ooo 'eck!) anyway and those idiot paper gaskets are none too good anyway. Do check the axle casing for rot - lord knows how but I had one on an RRC rust through and leak.

My 109 loooks worse than that - of course it ate a ring gear some time in its life and was bodge-welded... and leaks at the weld.

I'll give it a good checking over. It's going to be sanded down to bare metal and painted before the tub goes back on.
