I'm not sure if it's just me or this is common place so again i have to ask the powers to be out there, but:

Everytime i'm in a position where i have to do a hill start of any kind, and were not talking big hills, i find that she just drops off power and can hardly pull away unless i rev her hard with foot on clutch. The engine sound goes from the idle revs noise to a lower almost stall noise then if i'm lucky she picks up after a second and then livens right up when revs are slightly higher, if i'm on a moderate hill i simply have to give it more revs and ride clutch to get her to take up. Not a chance in hell with a trailer. Its low ratio to get going onto a flat and back into high at that point.

It's doing my head in now.

Have changed lift pump and taken out this stupid hand primer pump that was in line before it. Not sure where else to look now.

Any suggestions?????????

sorry spunka, as you say, many a thread so presumption that you all know which is completely wrong.
It's a 300tdi disco engine.

Well that's what i thought but just can't see how or where that would be happening.
As said, new lift pump, new filters, replaced fuel line where it looked dodgy.
Once up and running there's no stuttering, no low spots in acceleration etc.
I have recently put disco transfer box on to try and get a little more top end out of her, but to no avail.
Always seems to be 10 mile out on where i think she should be, although am beggining to think that thats just me.
Had a nice long run today and most i got out of her on a slight down hill was 70. Otherwise most i get is 60-65 tops in 5th and 50 in 4th.

That's the only other 'under power' issue that may be connected. But god knows how.

if youve changed the transfer box ratio and fitted bigger than std tyres? both will alter your overall gearing and throw the speedo reading out.... have you addressed this?

easiest way is to follow a standard car at a steady 30mph, 40 mph etc and note what your speedo reads

Or just use your satnav:D

How do i check that out and correct, or simply try and improve??
rev the engine while holding top hose from intercooler shoulod feel it expand firmly as revs rise ,you can check waste gate is shutting properly and shorten waste gate rod for more boost ,put clear plastic pipe in between filter and injection pump front banjo ,check tappets ,injection timing ,advancing just before knock can make quite a bit of difference to power ,need a set of drill bits 9.5mm downwards

She's had a power issue since i had her and prior to box change. Getting same out of dico box as i did out of defender.
Have done speed checks against another vehicle and with sat nav and pretty spot on.

I am compiling a list of these useful tips you guys are giving, for which i thank you all, in the hope that i can find someone with a little more awareness of these things to look at all this and help me give her a once, or twice, over.

It's just one of those things where i'm convinced its not right, but it's not horrendously bad. But horrendously frustrating me.

when your ready to try advancing timing give me a shout ,people often only set timing by the book ,often this leads to power loss ,also clear plastic pipe fit well and leave in

mmmm sounds like you need a tweak on pump.had it done on a 300 i used to have.did make a diff.also be carefull your pump isnt breaking down with some loose bits inside.took mine to diesel specialist didnt charge that much and was well worth it.

When you say 'diesel specialist' i take it you mean a tuning centre!!
I've been quoted near and beyond £100 for this tweaking and they say thats not including any replacement parts and with no guarantee of improvement.

One thing i will say for my old girl is that she seems really good on fuel consumption!!

the one i took it to were only 20 mins from me.and well worth it.no diff to fuel mpg at all.
they done a job sheet and noted all change they done on it,so if needed any thing further doing they would no exactly what adjustment were done.

its a pity you dont live staffordshire way.
