Sadly, It looks like I may have to sell my Defender :(:(:(. I have a bit of a dodgy hip and sitting in traffic every day with such a heavy clutch is agony. I love driving her but I cannot deal with the clutch. Is there anything that can be done (not converting to auto) with the clutch to make like more comfortable?

There is a mod to the clutch spring, At one point LR in their wisdom went to a design that did make the clutch heavy to press, mine had this and I modified it with a spring change.

What engine is yours?

Also , you can fit a booster to the clutchiirc it is the red rooster??? may be worth a search.

Yup! Costs about £25, takes about 30mins and some shouting to fit but it does go in. Makes the clutch 100 times better, its not exactly light but its certainly considerably easier to drive around. Id try this first before looking at the red booster.
 
I read an article in one of the LR mags which featured an owner of a Defender who had fitted a servo on his vehicle and was delighted with the results. I am almost sure that it cost him about £300 which to me sounds like good value.

I don't recall if he did the work himself or if it was undertaken by a professional. If I can find the article I will let you know more. I have thought about it for a while because I have a pain in my left hip but my GP says that it's my weight and I should do some exercise. My trouble is when I excercise I get hungry, when I get hungry I eat and put on more weight! So logic suggests excercise is the problem with mt hip!

Have a look and see what you think. Much better to spend a few pounds on your beloved vehicle and give your hip a new lease of life. Maybe you could get a grant from the NHS for the job. It must be much less expensive than a hip replacement and will free up a much needed bed for some poor sole that doesn't have a Defender.

Its a shame you're not closer - you could try the servo'd clutch.... happy to help if I can ...:)

You can also cut the pedal pad off, add 30-35 mm to its length and change the angle of the pad pad when you weld it back, the extra length and arc of the pad makes a big difference, I'll search for the drawing, but it was some time ago!
 
Spring mod is the best place to start pal.
Which clutch spring have you got for starters?

The top one is way lighter and I can easily push it down by hand, my knee used to hurt pushing the old style one down but not anymore :D
 
I had a similar experience, and did what Marmaduke's suggesting (in fact I changed the whole pedal unit for a later one with that rollover spring while it was out for new master cylinder...). Took me a while because I'm slow and have to check everything fifty times before I do it, but it's made a big difference. Not just lighter, feels more precise too (although that might be down to new master and slave). Recommended as a cheap fix.
