Hi everyone I have moved the Diff shifter to left right to make sure it’s in neutral and magically the judder in reverse has gone. Does anyone have any idea why did that happened at the first place?
Please explain a bit more.
If you move it to the left it goes to "diff locked" position .
Neutral for the TB is up "half" and you wouldn't be able to drive it in any gear.

So do you know exactly where you are?

In that cases it is floor plates and trans tunnel out, always worth getting new red plastic blocks for the self tappers, and changing the self tappers to stainless also helps in the future.

The standard M10 nuts that hold the box to the engine can be awkward to get a socket on, so change them for flanged M10 nuts which take a15mm socket rather than a 17mm and make things much easier.

Blocks/self tappers and flanged nuts cheap enough off ebay.

Plus one with marjon above.
Need to know how it drives. And when it judders.
1 Lever back and to right
2 lever back and to left
3 lever forward [ low gears] to right
4 lever back to the left.
All both in forward and in reverse. And does your diff lock light work.

Linkage gone a bit stiff, I should think. Common if you don't use diff lock much.

Sorry I don’t know how to use the Diff and never tried it. I’ve advised by the previous owner not to mess around with Diff stick unless I want to pull down a building. I have just moved the Diff lock stick to left and right like we check the gearbox stick to check for neutral.

Sorry I have no idea about all of this, I will read Haynes manual or to find it out on YouTube

Do you know the previous owner? If so next time you meet him give him a slap ;) .
It’s there for a reason so learn what it’s for.
Move all the way to the right and back towards the seat is the normal driving Position for most.

If it’s not doing it now I wonder if it had been moved to the left into diff lock by mistake?

One must not drive on hard surface, the road with the stick to the left. There is no neutral in the side to side movement, its either lock in or lock out. There is a neutral between the high low gears back and forward on the stick.
I sometimes think Land Rover should have stuck with the early Range Rover system of separate controls for high/low and diff lock.

I was wondering if it was juddering cos it was in diff lock and after moving it side to side the judder went away

Use all the features of your vehicle, or they will seize up or fail.
Low range can be safely used for backing into parking spaces, and similar.
Centre Diff Lock can be used on slippery surfaces, mud, sand or gravel. Best not used on the road.
As stated above^^^^, there is a neutral between High and Low Range, fore and aft movement of the small stick. No neutral on side to side movement of the small stick.

I will try this and come back to you. Does these has to be done while driving or Defender on axel stands. Sorry I have no clue

Hi I don’t know how diff lock lever work. I have removed rear Prop shaft to see if it makes any clunk/judder or not.
Please explain in detail how to engage/disengage diff lock and how high low diff works?

So you have removed the rear prop does it still drives?

Diff is locked if you move the stick to the left, if you have removed a prop and it drives you have diff lock engaged, move it back to the right see if it still drives.
Hi and low is front to back movement of the stick (its been explained before)
Its simple really what don't you get?

Look at the top of the stick there are many clues on it 🤔.

Hi thanks for your reply, sorry I can’t understand being daft. Small gearstick is in Right then rear position, then I can see rear TB shaft is spinning but it doesn’t drive and front prop shaft is not spinning. Is there’s anyway I could just make it to drive front wheels only? What would be position of the small gearstick please

Sorry I think I have figured it out. If I move the small stick to the left if engage the Diff lock and it drives without the rear prop shaft and light illuminate on the dash board. So does that mean small stick positions to the Right and back only drives rear wheels?

You are getting close.
To the right is unlocked diff, forward or back is lo or hi gear.
To the left is diff locked so will drive with a prop removed, front or back. It locks the 2 flanges together (the 1s to the props).

The funny thing is although the stick knob shows an H gate it’s not actually the case (maybe it’s just mechanically sympathetic).
You can just shift left or right without moving forwards or back, which has been done by mistake many times.

Thanks for your help. Some reason when I move it to the Diff lock position then it takes around half a minute to illustrate the Diff light and to engage. Is it supposed to be like this?
