and is cheap to buy

a vvc freelander would run rings around a 4.6 p38

Cheers for the info, this is things I wanted to know instead of the likes of comments from "Fannyatic" If members are so knowledgeable about Land Rover you would think they would by tripping over to help and advise "both are ****" isn't knowledge but what can I expect another defender who want's to rule the world.....
 
A 220 or 620 Turbo lump can be tweaked to 300bhp plus. But that doesn't mean it is something you want to do in a car with drum brakes, the aerodynamics of a (rounded) brick and drive train problems.
Have yu considered 2wd/4wd? LSD or not? Insurance? Engineers report?

It seems to me that yu have already made your mind up - so go for it. Just let us know how yu get on.

When my 90 has quad cam v8 fitted and has reliable 260hp then I challenge anyone to get more power out of an rv8 for £500 which is what my conversion should cost.

The rv8 liner issues and prehistoric design mean that trying to get decent economy and power from them costs £****.
The k series has problems with head gaskets and loose liners, the tickford based early rover 820 vitesse could easily push 300hp.

So I would suggest that both rv8 and 1.8 k series are **** compared to alternatives

Afraid waffle is all part of the Fender Benders reparte along with the same comments repeated again & again & again & again & again.

There are good people on here with serious knowledge who will happily share it with you but you do need to wade through a load of dross. Hope you do your conversion & it works out for you.
 
Was just looking at it as a question, would effect insurance etc as a mod but that shouldn't put me off, the whole question was raised in line with my current engine issue (second option) but looks like my engine is sound enough to rebuild. But going to upgrade thermo and move to MLS Gasket..... This VVC I've seen is a very nice rebuild mind......
 
Engines dont have to last forever.

why do you think lotus used the k series

the vvc has more power to weight than a civic type r vtec engine

ok so a freelander isnt the ideal engine to take advantage of this but the modular design of modern engines and engine management systems means its a plug and play conversion
 
I have a VVC engined MGF and you do need to rev it to get the extra power from the VVC unit - above 4k rpm until it starts to show so probably not best suited to the Freelander but it would be interesting to drive one to see :D

Maybe the 1.8T would be the better option?
