The VVC K series has a different torque range from the standard, which may not be so good in a freelander as you want the torque in the lower revs rather than in the higher.
I've read and Northern Irelander has confirmed this for me that the 1.8T doesn't have THAT much more power and it really isn't worth bothering with.
If you want more power out of your K series, a VVC head with non VVC cams and blanking plates (for the larger valves etc), individual throttle bodies and an emerald ECU will be a lot better in the freeby than the VVC mechs.

1.8T would only be better as it has less issues than the K1.8 from what I understand.

Not very tricky at all really with a haynes manual and the help of the internet. the MG-Rover forum is a very good forum for reading etc regarding modifying the K series. The only thing is expense. My throttle bodies set me back £400 alone and an emerald ECU would cost about £500/£600.
The 1.8K turbo lump can suffer from the same problems as the standard 1.8K. Some might say there would be more chance of the head gasket going on a turbo lump as the compression is a bit higher in the cylinders. The only way the turbo lump could be better is from the forged pistons and a few other upgraded bits and pieces but that doesn't mean it is more reliable.

I might just live with my standard K for now, unless upgrading the parts is classed as a mod!! HAhaha
I had thought about stripping out the liners/pistons etc on my unit and renewing all parts that I can but since the Bottom End is OK I can live with it for now.
All the new parts arrived yesterday, Belt Kit (Auto)/Oil Rail Ladder/MLS Gasket and other Gaskets/Filters/Plugs/Oil/Bolts. So nothing stopping me getting back out there on Saturday and put the thing back together, that is once I've took the bloody under-guard off that things a beast!

Hey don't think it's a daft question.........you might find the motor slightly less
tractable......which is why LR did not bother. These little 1.8's are good for over 200HP great for light weight caterhams but gutless for plugging around.
These guys never bothered with VVC kit.....just gas flow head, cams and throttle bodies...and chip change. Google Emerald M3D.....and give Dave Walker a ring.....forget VVC.
Why not try a cheep nitrous oxide kit.........I would imagine you would have to be super careful with cylinderhead blowing. Performance would be ace....enough to scare a 4ltr Range Rover whilst the gas and cylinder head lasted!!!

I think you've spent to much time reading "MAXPOWER" haha I like it but I'm not that insane to spend all that cash only to speed up the process for spending even more cash cos I've kill the thing.
Mine isn't the fastest thing on the road but it's alright and drives great in the snow, I've passed many for Range Rover going up the hills in 4wheel drive poss because most are driven with low pro tyres etc and are only really good for lookin at. Shame cos they are nice motors, I'd have one!
Defenders are fun, I had a works one years ago when I worked for the Gov, that was slow, cold and made a great deal of noise "all over" not for comfort.
Disco's some are OK some are dated to look at.
That's why I settled for the Freelander 3 door, get the softtop off in the good weather and can load her up and get out and enjoy the mud.

A 'cheap nitrous kit' would be a good way to wreck your K series, those things aren't for road going cars and even the competition K's that have nitrous need rebuilding almost every several hundred miles.
If you don't want to go to the expense of a VVC or the direct to head throttle body route, you could just upgrade your plastic throttle body for now to the aluminium 52mm version and use a conical K&N on the end. This can give a noticable improvement and makes the throttle that little more responsive.

Yes, MHM recommends this conversion and it would make a great motor but i believe it's yet to be tried by anyone so it would be a hell of a project.
