Reet here we go, Im after some direction or ideas or general assistance in keeping the dummy in and the lip from quivering.

The problem is I have a Detroit locker in the rear of the disco, and its a lovely bit of kit and has taken a hell of a lot of abuse and just keeps going, quite recently (less than six months ago) bought some Insa Special Tracks in a 235/85 flavour and they also are lovely and very grippy in the sticky stuff but this is where the problem is- they are too grippy and i have now snapped both halfshafts in the last 3 months.

My dilemma is if i upgrade to HD shafts a la Ashcrofts then im sure the Detroit will get destroyed as there wont be a weak link between the wheels and the diff any longer-never mind the fact that they are well pricey too:eek:, but could it just be that the halfshafts that were in were getting on a bit and they were weakend and due to go:scratching_chin:- so do i replace with standards??

OR

Do i get rid of the special tracks and go for something a bit bigger, as im disappointed with the size of the specials- they are an inch shorter than the same size tyres i had on before- but with a slightly less aggressive pattern thus meaning i can replace the shafts with standards and hopefully i wont shear those with such frequency as the current combination???

If im totally honest im leaning towards selling the specials and getting something like a kumho or BFG mud 275 ish.

oh and the annual technical test is due on the 2nd of october so whatever i do it looks like i have to do it soon:(

come on help me out here i really cant decide.

i found the cheapo aftermarket shafts dont last long with a detroit,( approx 10 mins my last 2) but LR originals if driven carefully lasted a couple of years and with 35" simex, so use a bit less right foot

well here is where it went, odd but i suppose that must be its weakest area, Johnlad how much did the original shafts set you back?

Did both mine in an hour, both broke the same place as yours, think they gat weak over time as put second hand ones in and next day did even more extreme lanes no probs, as reference got Ashcroft air locker and 285/75 insa special tracks, I like the weak link thing and just carry spares :)

Got 35 10.5 siverstone extreme tyres with arb lockers front and rear, done a cv todate, always carry rear shafts will now carry fronts.
Something has to give if the tyres are gripping and drive is given to all wheels, like john lad said a little less loud pedal.
What you dont know is the condition of your existing shafts. Second hand shafts are cheep enough to carry as spares and not too difficult to replace on the rear
