if ya cant afford to insure it you wont afford to buy it.Thats gonna have a reserve of 3-3.5k.Dont like the crossmember covered like that and the fairlead seems awefully low

The 200tdi was introduced as the 'h' reg...so yes its 'legal' for your insurance companys purposes...

Aye looks like a 'Fender 300 tdi retrofit to me, the turbo is in the right place for one thing. Looks like a fairly decent motor to me anyway

I think what he's getting at is 'can i get away with calling it a 90 td?' and the answer is...no.

The 'modified' intercooler top hose on that engine in the picture was fitted to the late 300tdi engine. Differs slightly from the early engines that was a single hose without the branch in the pipe. I only know coz I have a 94 and a 97 on the drive.
Looks very tidy

Here is the pic of the engine. But I need to know if a Defender being registered on the 1 August 1990 is meant to have or not meant to have a 200TDi. The pic maybe a 200TDi, but if this Defender is not meant to have it, it means I can't buy it because I'm only 23 and the insurance on an engine conversion is huge.
Thanks

No - it's a 2.5 TD any way you look at it - when they say what engine, you say 2.5 Turbo Diesel - no lies - or even better, tell them it is a 300tdi 4C TD - if they say as fitted just say yes - (act daft) - some of the purists may argue here, that IF you had a bad accident it would not be covered. I think I once told one of my insurers that I had a "newer" version of the 2.5TD LR engine because you could not get the old engine any more and they said OK, what is it, and they took it as it was no bother. But you make it so it is a replacement part, rather than an upgrade. Sureterm direct don't seem to care, even if you tell them it is a retro fitted upgraded engine - as long as it is a LR engine.

What is fitted is a 300tdi engine, it is probably from a Defender because it has the proper 300tdi pipework, it is also located in the proper 300tdi position which means that the engine mounts have been moved forward from the 2.5/200tdi positions, which also means that it almost certainly has a different gearbox as the LT77 that would have been fitted originally would have sat far to far forward.

defo a 300tdi as the engine is sitting right at the front so must also be on a r380 box i guess

Here's the link

1990 LAND ROVER 90 4C SW DT DIESEL BLUE on eBay (end time 12-Apr-10 14:30:32 BST)

So it is a 200TDi, but is it meant to have one being registered on 1st Aug

something don't ring true

wrong engine for year (but it's a tidy upgrade if it's right) - wrong steering wheel - cabin looks way too clean, as does the rear load space - door cards and seats look brand new

rings alarm bells to me - but the owner might have spent a fortune on it

be careful

I agree.... Commercial side panels and CSW roof?.... AND, it has a radio and fitted speakers! 300tdi steering wheel.... almost as if a 1997 300tdi has been stripped and put on a 200tdi chassis.
