Hi all,

Complete newbie here in the landrover scene.

I have a 2001 TD5 Braemar edition disco 2.

Im having problems with the gearbox, mainly selection 1st and reverse while the engine is running.
The gears will select while not running very easily but as soon as you start her then the problems start.
once in 1st gear it seems to drive as it should albeit having to be very slow in changing through the gears or its very "notchy" and crunches into gear.

The previous owner said its had:

a Low mileage gearbox from a landrover breakers fitted
A new uprated clutch,
New Master and Slave cylinder
Clutch oil changed

Any ideas before i start to get my hands dirty and start from the beginning and work me way through it all.

Could it be the bias plate, my disco has the same problem, but the resistance seems to come from the gear stick rather gearbox

^^^+1 .... bleed the system well first of all, maybe you are lucky... stick the clutch pedal to the floor with something and leave it so over night
 
being a newbie and all, whats the sticking the clutch to the floor going to do?
ill do it tomorrow night tho as im off work on friday.

The clutch system was bled up using a hand vac pump to ensure the whole system was air free.

1. It will force air bubbles up and out of the master cylinder -probably :eek:
 
i have ordered a new bias plate and the springs,
Also i have wedged the clutch pedal down to the floor to see if that makes any difference.
 
no but im taking it to a friends garage tomorrow morning to change the oil and filters, so will check it while im under there.

The wedging the clutch to the floor did nothing btw.

then it's not a bleeding issue.... you better change the oil in the box with MTF94 if you dont know it's history... seems strange but it could make a huge difference... if you will remove the console to check the bias, replace the gear change pivot too, this one FRC9985 BUSH GEAR CHANGE PIVOT | Discovery 2 1998-2004: Transmission | shop | www.lrseries.com | L. R. Series , you'll see it when the bias plate is removed, and when you put everything back before you tighten the bolts take care of the adjustment:

-Select 4th gear and move lever fully to the right
and tighten bias plate adjustment bolts to 25
Nm (18 lbf.ft).
-Check adjustment is correct by selecting 3rd
and 4th gears.

that's very important....but you must know that usually the bias plate/springs failure affects the higher gears rather than 1'st and 2'nd ... though that bush wear could make you trouble in all gears
 
latest news on the situation

I have changed the engine oil, both filters and also done the gearbox oil to mtf 94 as suggested........

But no difference as yet,

Another thing i have noticed is when you select 1st gear, and bring the clutch up to the biting point there is a noise that seems like its coming from the clutch pedal, but it sounds of a metalic nature.

not done the bias plate as yet, going to do that monday, as a local guy i know wants to watch/help/do this for future reference for himself.
 
you check bias plate by pushing lever over to one side and seeing if it springs back to the middle if it does its fine ,the bias plate and springs are there to help you find 3rd and 4th gear ,1st and 2nd you just push all the way over to the left ,5th and rev all the way over to the right ,springs hold it in alignment of 3rd and 4th ,what was oil like you drained out ,metal sheen or debris etc if noise when pressing clutch goes when pedal fully pressed down or only just pressed its normally spigot bush in end of crank if noise is there when fully pressed normally release bearing ,does it feel like clutch is dragging when pedal fully pressed try it with t/box in neutral and run through gears see which is effected or not and by amount
 
the gear stick does come back to its central position but its not as strond as i would have expected it to be (coming from a car to this i may be expecting alot)

The oil we drained out the engine was dirty but VERY thin, we got told that the oil it has in is 10/40, so its had that in this time.
The oil that came from the gearbox, was also very dirty but there were no signs of any debris in there.

Theres no noise on the clutch while its not in gear (clutch in or out) its when you select 1st gear and bring it to biting point on clutch that it makes the noise.

It does feel like the clutch is dragging but the strange thing is you put it in the low range and it selects all gears very easily and accuratly, swap it into high range and the problems start.
 
if there is anyone around the Mansfield area, ill be happy to bring the car to you so that you can see what i mean?
