took the car down to a friends unit (raining outside) and we did the bias plate and the springs, but while we were delving into that area we took the plate off the top so we could have a look at the gearings, nothing really bad in there, very slight and i mean slight shavings off the cogs.
But the thing that made me wonder the most was the amount of play in the input selection shaft (well i think thats what it was) take the top off and its the bar thats at the top over the gears, there was at least 5mm of play side to side.

put it all back together and started the car up, put it into 1st with the clutch down and it started to creep forward, so it looks like the clutch is not clearing enough to select the gears correctly.

selector shaft will move alot in 3 places were its waisted for detent balls to sit ,slight shaving off the gears ?5th been the one you can see, would sound like clutch issue

if the clutch was to be put in the wrong way round, i would get no gears at all will i?
so im assuming that it has to be a bleeding issue then?

i had the same problem on my 2001 td5 disco, i sent it into allabout 4x4 and it turned out to be the clutch fork and push rod. they were so badly worn that the push rod was over travelling and blew the seals on the slave too, the parts are fairly cheap but while the gearbox was off i had a clutch kit fitted as the motors done 103k. problem now solved and total cost was £663, hope this helps.
