doesn't it work easyer if u "pump up'' the clutch? ... cos if it does first of all bleed it well, if no improvement i think the pressure plate got tired. Also worth to check the lever bias
The gear stick does return to the centre ok however there is less resistance pushing it left. But the resistance does seem to come from the gear stick, not the gear box, it's almost as if something is blocking the gear stick preventing it slipping easily into first or second gear. Could this be the bias plate?

could be something related to bias or selector, try first to adjust the bias if the plate isnt cracked(if it's cracked u have the answer 
)... loosen the 4 bolts, put in 4'th gear and push the lever maximum to right while u tighten the bolts diagonally beginning from the right. the selector mechanism has a plastic bush under the bias which used to crack also, this one FRC9985 BUSH GEAR CHANGE PIVOT | Discovery 2 1998-2004: Transmission | shop | www.lrseries.com | L. bias plate is on slotted holes and needs adjusting so that when complete lever put on when pushed either side and let go lever returns to 3rd 4th gear alignment,is much easier to fit with gear box top off
