Hi landy lovers... 1998 dse.. need to replace mass fly wheel.. but is the gearbox removal a realistic diy job?? I mean it will consised of me my mate my drive way and two halfords ramps.... is it really that heavy??.. compeared to a ford xr4x4 2.9 box (which i done on me drive way).. any advice would be great.. many thanks stuart..

Surley a jack can be used to lower and then raise the gearbox back into position.

Its all possible, you just have to use your brain.

its qiute heavy in one lump......there was 4 of us to get it out the back of me van

a couple of scaffold bar and some strops on the inside and a couple of inflatable mattresses underneath

glad you said that i thought it was me thinking it was bloody heavy last one i did we used engine lift though open door strap round gearbox lowered it down and put it back the same way, we found that much safer

a crane is handy - but it's really not needed if you employ a little ingenuity

mines out of the defender and It was heavy as hell we pulled it with 2 people a 3 ton jack and some old tyres just in case.

will be using a strop and engine crane to refit possibly

HI stuart, guess you took the plunge with new DMF, had 3 attempts at replying to your pm hope you got it. I would go with engine lift option thats how I did gearbox change on my classic ( on my own by the way ! )
