While changing the fuel filter last week on a defender 110 TD5, the fuel filter housing was so corroded it split into two halves.


I've fitted the new filter housing and filter this morning, but I have been trying all day to bleed the system with no luck. I've changed the filter several times before and it was always just a matter of turning the key to position two and listening to the diesel pump scream for three minutes until it stopped, then turning it off and on again and then repeating it three or four times.


This time however, there's only a slight humming noise coming from the pump, no matter what I try, I have even tried pressing the accelerator peddle five times technique to make the ECU purge the system. But the pump is still not nearly loud as it should be.


I haven't started the land rover for over a week, while I waited for the part to arrive. This is the only difference from the other times when I have changed the fuel filter. I hope the fuel pump is not the problem.


Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible it was previously 'screaming' as the cracked housing may have been letting in air? If the system has no air within it the fuel pump would run fairly quietly.

Good luck anyway, I've had 2 weeks of fuel pump 'issues' - I can't understand why they didn't put a removable panel in the rear tub floor to make access a little easier as per the disco.

The housing split away from the chasse , the top of it (over the filter ) stayed intact and was air tight.
I have the landy 11 years now and the pump has always been loud .
I changed the filter when ever it got very bad which always worked .
I will cut a hole in the floor for access if it is the pump but hope its something else. The cheap pumps have a bad rep and landrover ones cost a fortune plus all the cutting and ripping out.

I changed the fuel filter on my Fathers D2, before doing this it was fine. Ran OK, but felt a little sluggish. Once I changed the filter, it would not start , could hear the pump running!, I checked the quantity of fuel that was getting to the FPR and it was less than it should be.

I swapped the fuel pump for the one out of my D2 and it started after one purge cycle, I checked the fuel quantity at the FPR and it was much higher.
I do not remember the exact amount but the flows from each pump correlated to the the approx amounts the Low and High pressure pumps should deliver.

The high pressure pump should deliver 4 bar to the FPR at the cylinder head, not easy to test the pressure being delivered without the gauge and an adapter etc. I was able to check there was flow by filling a bucket.

It does sound like the pump dude
