I'm sure someone has had this happen to them. I turned a corner rather niftily and suddenly the fuel guage read empty and the fuel light came on. It was a quarter-half full, so out of nervousness I filled up and only squeezed 40 litre of diesel in. Has someting fallen off or jammed? Any ideas on what to do?

It was a quarter to half full and u squeezed 40 litres in? That's quite a lot. Don't worry about your fuel gauge. It'll show you what's in your tank as best it can when your're facing down hill, and usually a bit less than you actually have when it's on the flat. When the needle is about 1/4 It will drop right down when you turn corners, and the light will come on well before you need to fill up. You may also notice that this happens when you apply the brakes sometimes. It's just what they do so that you know you've got some fuel left to get you down the fell and back up the road. I think they use a floating system in a tank the size of your water storage in the loft. Just think how it'd swish around if you put that on 4 big wheels and some massive springs!

Fuel tank capacity is 60ltrs. So 1/4 tank would be 15ltrs leaving room for 45ltrs so 40ltrs is about right. It means it was 1/3 full
 
I must aplogoise. My tank must have a layer of ****e stuck at the bottom
 
If I may slightly hijack this thread, the Fuel Guage on my 90 was all over the place, a new sender/float unit sorted the guage but the light stays on most of the time, is there anything else in the system that might benefit from a gentle thwack?
 
Maybe I shoudl add that the guage read empty and the light was on when the tank was full is still like that after 70 miles and a day later.
 
60 litres? doesnt it depend on what you have? my 90 SW only holds 45litres maybe 1 or 2 extra with the filler neck.

and our works 110's hold around 80litres. which ones hold 60?

Mine read Full all the time. even when I ran out of diesel, it was still registered as full.

I've always understood the 110/130 held 60 ltrs I know th 90's have smaller tanks Just posted that a minute ago.
 
yer you posted same time as me :) didnt see it. i think the rear mounted tanks on 110 vans hold 80 litres. mine deff only holds 45 (90 SW)

And for the sake of completeness the 130 has (so I'm told) a Range Rover galvanised tank.
But whatever the tank or size, the guage has stopped working and reads empty. Not too convenient watching the mileometer and filling up when 250 miles are done.

Look on the bright side at least you wont be sucking up crap off the bottom of the tank.
 
I have a 110 CSW and it holds about 70 litres when dead empty. I didn't realise there was such a big difference
 
AH've jus been checking and it seems the offacial 110/130 fuel tank capacity is 20.4 US gallons or 77ltrs. the new defender 90/110/130 capacities are 60/75/75 ltr so it looks like the new 90 gets a bigger fuel tank.
 
OK. Thansk for the size comments and the suggestion that the sender is fooked. Any other suggestions about where a thwack might help (if the flotat is stuck - i did turn the corner rather smartly on a dry road...), or a wire that may have come loose.
