Hi, not on this site alot but thought this would be the best place for advice. I have a 2003 freelander 1 1.8 petrol and it has been in the garage for the past 2 months and it is still there not running. It went in to get the engine changed out after the head gasket blew. Replacement engine was fitted and all seemed to be going well until it came to starting and running it. Engine starts and runs for approx 4-5 seconds before cutting out.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could cause this as the mechanic claims to have tried everything he knows.

Any suggestions or advice is greatly appreciated.

Bloody Hope not, The mechanic has said that everything is doing what it should but it seems like the ECU is shutting the engine down. Can the ECU be replaced or is it set to the car?
 
The garage thought that too so they got a code from Land Rover to reset the immobiliser and nothing changed. If it was a problem with the immobiliser, would the car start in the first place?
 
How did your brother sort it? Do you know what the little chip does and how it could be damaged/lost?

I can see it being your key and no it should not start if there is a issue with the ecu have they pluged it into an analiser it might be worth the money getting it done if he does not have one because they are expensive ask if he knows anyone with one and the ecu can be replaced hope this helps
 
The last I have heard is that the car is going to another garage for the ECU to be checked as you suggested as soon as a slot is available. I am trying to find the spare key at the moment to try but can't find it!!

Do you know how much it would cost to get key repaired? Im guessing it would have to be a job for the main dealer.

If it is the key, Why would the engine start and then cut out?

The mechanic at this garage said you cant change out the ECU as it is set to the electrics on the car.

The immobiliser cuts the engine if the ECU detects there no chip or wrong chip. Luckily by brother found the small capsule chip on the road. He dropped the keys and chip fell out. On the Freelander I think the chip is in Lock and Unlock pad. If differs a lot to every car.

To get a new chip or keys the dealer would need all the details about the car and ID. Cost would be over £100 for a new chip or key...

What does the immobiliser light do when you try and start the engine?
 
What I've been told by the garage is that the dash light goes off as normal and all other lights are ok which made me and the mechanic think ECU rather than the immobiliser being an issue.

The chip must be enclosed within the key on freelanders. Hopefully will find the spare key and can try that on the car tomorrow.
