Does he mean in tank pump? Although I'm not sure how pipes attach to tank pump
I would think so they attache as i said with olives and tube nuts. Unless somebody has cut the unions off. Think we need a photo.

Sounds like maybe some butchery has taken place
I take it they are plastic pipes. Get a cup boil the kettle and fill the cup, stick the portion of the pipe that goes on the union in it to soften it, push over union. Or use an hair drier on it, don't melt it though. Little bit of grease on union may aid sliding on.
Better to boil kettle fill cup, boil kettle again whilst cup is standing, empty cup fill again with hot water it stays hotter longer that way.

Always buy new unions they distort once used and hard to reuse .
