Me again!
Went out this morning opened the door, except that I didn't. The handle pulled right out and did not open the door. All was working perfectly last time it was used (Tuesday). I have done a search but just thought if I post a picture some person wiser than me might be able to point me in the right direction.

Thanks wammers, gives me a bit more confidence to get in there a fix it. A right pain in the **** well you know! That is an excellent post though.
 
If your other doors unlock, plus you can open the drivers door from the inner handle. You maybe lucky that its only the plastic cam that pulls the release rod, you can get a rebuild kit from the stealers for about 3 quid a handle, its fiddly can can be done with care.....item 23 if your lucky

Thanks for that zzr1200, All the other doors are okay and I can open it from inside, I will be trying to get at it tomorrow. Will the failure of the cam be obvious? Just hope the rain stays away!

Thanks Keith, I did look at your link from a previous posting but did not find what seemed the same as my problem. The rear of the handle has just (suddenly) pulled out from the door but the door still operates from inside.

If you have the P38 workshop manual I'd recommend you study it, regarding door lock/handle removal (I can email you a copy if you don't have it, pm me your email address, w/shop file is almost 20mb)

Remove the door trim pad and the internal clear plastic sheet carefully you should be able to see the plastic cam, the retaining clip for the locking rod can be a bugger to remove. I'd also order the clip as well as the cam kit.

Warning.

I managed to break the alloy arm (I repaired it with Devcon) which is turned by the key to unlock the door lock on mine while trying to remove the handle but this was because I hadn't studied the manual first , the plastic cam pulls the door opening rod only.

I found it easier to remove the door handle from the door (remove the bolt, slide the handle assembly sideways, then gently pull the handle forward slightly) and then remove the clip holding the locking rod through the hole under cover in the door. A second pair of hands can be useful at times.

If you break the alloy arm you have to repair it or buy a new handle assembly which is about 45 quid and a 2 weeks ordering time from LR...:eek:

Take your time, be careful and gentle.

Ordered both Door Lock Cam Kits today from Westover Land Rover at Christchurch £9.12 the pair, recorded delivery. Looks like I will be getting them Wednesday/Thursday.
 
Pulled the trim and got the plastic cam out, it was already loose, the door handle had skipped out of the cup on the cam and the pivot pit was missing from the cam. I found loads of bits in the bottom of the door, I think someone had changed the handle before (with secondhand) as the old lock and collets were among the debris, why are people so lazy?

So my "There's a pin that falls out" was remarkably accurate then. :):):)

REMARKABLY!! might have been among the debris in the bottom of the door. I found two, both corroded. I have a snake camera that has its own led light source so was able to have a 'scrat' around in there. It is okay but not really good enough to get the detailed pictures one might desire. (bit posh there :D)
 
:p Cam Locks arrived this morning, door handle now fixed!!:p
Many thanks to all who helped and commented, thanks chaps, what a brilliant forum, glad I am a member. Thanks to zzr1200 for the info and manual pages. Going to do the passenger side soon and will post pics.
